I started my meditation experience with qi gong, a very energizing and healing thing. It is good for beginners as it focuses on movement instead of pure concentration. From that I have moved on to various meditation techniques and am currently trying to learn remote viewing. All this over about 5 years.
Check out the "modern qigong" site, great for beginners, also hreat if you have physical problems.
Good luck!

took about 1-2 weeks of 15-25 minutes practice a day I reached this point. Good stuff mate

Lucky you man!! It's taken me nearly 7 years to get near that point, and I'm still not quite there yet!!

It doesn't have to take that long at all. 1-2 weeks is pretty quick, but even for someone with no meditation experience, it shouldn't take longer than a few months with the right techniques and training. I had some experience behind me, but when I really knuckled down and made this my goal, I managed it in about 3 or 4 weeks. And once I had a strong foundation, it made everything else seem so much easier and effortless.

I know that standard mediation practice is to focus on your breath but is there anything else to try? I want to find one that works for me. I heard counting your breaths up to four and then down is a good one.

Get one of these and learn to play it. Due to the way you breath when you play it you will start to merge with your breath and it will start to seem like it's playing it's self and you'll be consumed into the deep vibrating drone of the didgeridoo

Breath is a good way to ensure you maintain focus.
