I know that standard mediation practice is to focus on your breath but is there anything else to try? I want to find one that works for me. I heard counting your breaths up to four and then down is a good one.

Most gurus and whatnot recommend watching the breath until you are more experienced. Then there is a variety of different meditation techniques ranging from mantras to ohm vibrations to focus on external objects or other physical sensations aside from breathing.

Just focus on soething. You can start aloud by saying "om nama shivaya" or "I belong to love". It doesn have to be a mantra. Just something that means something to you
Then just repeat for 20 mins. You can count to 10. Or focus on breath inhale and exhale

I found breath to be difficult too. There are so many ways to meditate, all equally excellent.
I learned first on "space" then sound. Once you get one down though the others(such as breath) are easier. Just what are your tendencies? Are you more visual? Pick a visual focal(there are many such as earth, water, body stuff). Auditory? Sound or mantras are great, and amazing when you get to the point of immersion(really they all are, but meditation is like a boat, pick a boat, cross the river, it's great).
With breath, I've heard one is to act as a gatekeeper, keeping the focus on the sensation as it enters the gate(nose), but not following it in.
So many great authors too, free e-books and pay, online videos, recordings, etc. More like what is your tendencies and find what fits, then stick with it, and it'll work.

Get one of these and learn to play it. Due to the way you breath when you play it you will start to merge with your breath and it will start to seem like it's playing it's self and you'll be consumed into the deep vibrating drone of the didgeridoo

Something like Trakata might be a good place to start. This is where you put all of your focus on an external object such as a candle flame. It helps you learn to build awareness and keep your focus fixed on the object, instead of getting caught up in the ramblings of the mind, which is what usually happens. Once you've got to grips with that, you can then change your focus to a meditation internal world, and probably be more successful at it because you will have some practice behind you.
It seems the reason a lot of people struggle with meditation is because they don't get the basics down first. My teacher says that you shouldn't move on to any more complex meditations until you can hold your focus on an object for a full 15 minutes without getting caught up and lost in mindstream, even once. And if you practice every day, it's a lot easier to achieve than you would imagine.

I, too, meditate. Have been for a little while now. The breath and the function of breathing are a good start! Once I felt comfortable there, I added intention- like forgiveness. Hope that helps. You may inquire at your leisure. Matt

One that I find to be good without too much thinking or considering involved is simple zazen. All you do is sit with your legs crossed, full or half lotus, or however just keep your back straight. Put your left palm on your right palm and let it settle onto your lap, then bring your focus to the spot midway between your bellybutton and spine. Count to 10 after each exhale, repeat, like in,out, 1.. in out 2... keep it steady and exhale fully..It's good to start slow, like 20 minutes tops. Personal tip : keep it simple, it can become dogmatic and argumentative just like religion. Cold showers are good before hand, and also breathing exercises ( pranayama ) too. Clearing your mind can be the best thing that ever happened to you. I like gentle yoga as well. Yoga with adriene on YouTube us good. Just some input. Check out be here now by ram dass bro.

Japa for me has been most excellent. It's like don't even worry about trying to meditate, but do as much japa beforehand as possible, building up gradually. BTW japa is silent repetition of a mantra with the mala beads. I recommend receiving the teaching from one who you consider to be qualified, and it should be a taraka (liberating) mantra. Best to learn a system around it if offered as well that supports meditation, and that it will.

Just Being is nice.
Rather than having the assumption you have to do something, watch this or that, think about this or that... i find it nice to just naturally effortlessly be as i am, as thoughts come i don't allow my attention to go with them and just remain as i am.
It can sound almost too simple, but only the mind makes things seem complicated.

I love all the self inquiry here. Formal practices are potent, but toil takes the time and energy these days. Being can be cultivated in most any circumstance.

Lucky you man!! It's taken me nearly 7 years to get near that point, and I'm still not quite there yet!!

as a fairly introverted dude i've always found whatever is here to be enough stimulation. it doesn't have to be a certain way to get me engaged. sometimes if there is too much stimulation i have to remove some but never do i feel the need to add something

Man, you are so incredibly obtuse sometimes. If you had bothered to take 3 seconds out of your day to click the link, you would have seen quite clearly that it says 'Free Course'.
Instead you pull your usual shit of asking an inane question without putting in the slightest bit of investigational work yourself.
I'm done.
