Infection or bruising?
    #22251473 - 09/17/15 02:23 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone, so this is my first time posting. Like many, I've spent a lot of time here reading and researching after watching the Let's Grow Mushrooms videos. Now, I'm on my first grow and I think two of my cakes might be infected. A friend of mine said that they were just bruised and not to worry, but I thought like anyone worried about an infection, I should get a second opinion.

This is the initial sport print I used to grow them, using the PF-Tek.

This has been a learning experience to say the least, of the 10 jars made, only 3 of them fully colonized. I still have 4 others at about 30 - 60 % colonization, and this is after about 3 months of incubation.

Now, I have two cakes that I am worried about. They've been in the fruiting chamber for about a week now;

Cake 1:

Cake 2:

Personally, it looks like some cobweb mold is growing, and the discoloration looks concerning to me. As I said, my buddy says it's just some bruising, and that I need to be more careful when birthing the cakes (which is probably partly true). However, I want to just be sure instead of letting the infection possibly spread.

But hey, there is at least some good news, the last cake is fruiting, and it looks amazing. :grin:

Thanks for the input!

Cobweb would cover that whole thing in a swath before you even knew what happened.  Those are fine.  I bet all the pins are going to come from the bottoms where the verm stuck to them.

:whathesaid:
You can pile a little Verm on top too...that's what I used to do with cakes...Make sure to mist, then fan to cause evaporation... Great pinning trigger.

Cut down the foil to about the size of the cake as well. :nyan:
