MARS What are they really looking for?
    #2225037 - 01/07/04 05:06 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Just out of curiosity am I the only person that just does not buy the story that the government spent $800 million dollars to look for life on mars.

$800 million to try and find some microbes or some proof that there was life on mars at one time.

I think they are looking or doing something else up there. Mabey some rare elements that are not found on earth or they are testing some weapon that is far to dangerous to test here.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks about the whole thing?
What is NASA looking for on mars?
You may choose only one
Life DUH!
Something Else.
They really are looking for life, but have another hidden agenda.

$800 million is not much to NASA...compare that with the BILLIONS they used to spend on space probes, especially the deep-space missions.

You have to remember here...scientists don't care about money, especially when it's not theirs that they are spending! All they want is to learn something they don't know...and they are willing to spend anything the gov will give them to do so!

Fortunately that's strictly federal money, and 95% of that comes from the rich. If you were a typical american 1 billion dollars works out to be something like $.15 out of your pocket.

Probably....look how much they spent on iraq. :smirk:

That would be a MAJOR discovery!, as currently earth is the only planet to hold life.  The fact that it was present on mars, and analysing that info may lead to important information regarding our orgins, or other life in the universe.

Why would you think that?!

I think there should be more missions like it...space is our imminent future.  I also don't think you should present laughable posts like this one, without some though going into it..
The mineral theory is possible, but the weapon?...mabye it was saddams, and they are confiscating it...

hers the deeal. all organisms grow and reproduce as a way of continuing the life of their race species whatever. now if you consider the fact that the earth will no longer be hospitable for human life, then you realise that if we dont follow this evolutionary process and expand our life beyond earth that we will become extinct. we are looking for a new place to live, to continue the human race, because this nice blue planet we all live on cant exist forever.

Of course there is no hidden agenda, thats being a bit to paranoid in my opinion, finding possible signs of life on mars is the mission for sure, although I don't think that they will find any, who knows.

Mabey it is just because I don't trust the US government, but I alwayse assume that they are up to no good.

I would think that there would be some religous implications if life is found on mars. Most religions believe that earth is the only place God created life. Finding life would dis-credit the bible and could have major social and political repercusions.

Why would the government release any info on finding life on mars which could spark more instability in an already unstable world.

It seems to me looking for life on mars is just a cover story for something else they are looking for or doing. Because even if they do find life they would be better of saying they didn't.

Mabey it's just political but there is a possiblity there is some other agenda going on this mission.

There was a study funded by the U.S. government that basically said
that if extra-terrestrial life were to be found it would destroy
society. I forget what the study was called.

That would be great if they did find life just so all those bible humping christains can be proved wrong once and for all. That would be crazy though to find out that life existed somewhere else besides earth, I bet it would definetly cause mass hysteria.

The study you are talking about was one of the FIRST things that NASA did after it was created. They wanted to find out what the effects on society would be of the news of ET life.

The study concluded that under no circumstances should the general public be informed of such a finding...as it would result in panic and chaos.

This was all those years ago when NASA was created...they actually admitted they wouldn't tell anyone.

Christianity also claimed the earth was the center of the universe.....they're still around even though we now orbit the sun, and know the world is round...

Thats teh good thing about interpreting gods words....they can mean anything.

ex: "God created teh world in seven days...." and i hear christians arguing the 'seven days' could in reality have been sever centuies etc, because 'gods day' isn't a human one etc etc...

My guess?

Hot Martian Chicks.

C'mon, didn't you ever get jealous Capt. Kirk got to bang all the hot aliens? I bet that's why Bush wants to go there. He'd be Capt. Kirk, and get first shot at the Hot Martian Chicks.
