Anyone experiencing cyclical mood changes
#22250071 - 09/17/15 09:17 AM (8 years, 4 months ago) |

Like living your life on an emotional sinusoid. Today you feel like the world is at your feet, tomorrow you feel like there is no meaning to life at all. The day after tomorrow you're on top of everything again...
This cyclical pattern makes it somewhat difficult to navigate through life but with time I've learned how to make the best of the highs and smooth out the lows. But it does lead to some stupid decisions every once in a while.
Who can say they've experienced anything like this? I know I can't be the only one.

Been like this for the past few years. Maybe partly due to me being sober about a day or less a week?

I had fluctuating extreme moods reminiscent of a rapid cycling bipolar.
I used Lamictal, the least toxic mood stabilizer, for about five years which cured it perfectly. Felt good all day, every day. I quit it because I wanted to experience lows again.

I've heard of it, but its not that. Maybe cyclothymia idk.
I was on mirtazapine for a while which was a big mistake IME. Was prescribed valproate but decided not to take it cause I had to have my liver enzyme levels monitored (meaning it was toxic).

How do you manage? I'd get hypomanic, make a bunch of decisions then snap out of it and be all like "holy fuck, why did I do what I did"

Haven't tried this drug. Acid was the most helpful drug in this regard. Kicks out the depression and no hypomania after a good trip.

Abilify here.
When I'm 'up' ...I can do no wrong. The world is a playground. When I'm 'down' ...everything I do, and have ever done is fucking stupid and worthless.

I don't really have one whole good day, and then a bad day the next.
Throughout a day I'll be feeling average, then all of a sudden I'll get really happy/ excited and feel like taking on the day; then a little while later I'll get hopeless and almost depressed. IDK mood swings are strange

A certain amount of that is perfectly normal. Yes, modern institutions would probably define that as Bi-Polar. If you are baseline, then extremely happy, that's called "hypomanic" (bi polar type 1) and if you are hypomanic with depressive tendencies, it's called bi polar type 2.
The problem of the industry is people take those labels as a lifelong ailment. Bi polar is VERY RARELY a lifetime prevalent disorder.
Think of it this way, lots of things interact with your emotional state. They're tied in with your environment (do you have a lot of stress at work/home/school), physical activity (how often do you exercise? Do you sit around a lot?), and your thought processes (do you think about sad things, or have to over-motivate to do anything?). (It's a constant push and pull between all of these things. If you work on one, the rest kinda follow, but you have to change your behaviors and thought processes if you want psychological change... (there are more subtle interactions like diet and sexlife type stuff, too, but now we're getting into the hierarchy of needs)
If it becomes too disruptive in your day to day life, or you just want some quick coping skills, see a psychologist. My mother is severely bipolar and the instant I had those symptoms, I had about three sessions before I was able to take the reigns and enforce improvements on my own.

Also a lot of people get mood changes with the change of the seasons, especially in places further from the equator.

Those last months though, OP was talking about daily shifts.
Either way, seasonal depression can be significant in some, too. In regards to all of these conditions, if it's disruptive to everyday life, it's maladaptive and could be worked on.

I think during the times of those seasonal shifts though, that daily mood shifts can be exacerbated

The seasons are always changing in a gradual way though.
Are there some areas where the weather is completely predictable four times a year or something and there are rapid shifts all at once? Jeeze, that'd make anyone go nuts, lol!

Don't listen to these knuckle heads that will tell you to take acid and it will go away.
Go to a medical professional and see if you can get a good psychiatrist and if needed medication. Hope that helps!

I've got manic depressive bi-polarism so I always am.
Funny enough I find come helps stabilize my mood.

I feel like that all the time.
It's called BIPOLAR disorder.
One minute I'm on top of the world and I feel like I can accomplish anything and that nothing can stand in my way, the next minute I'm down in the dumps, I want to die, I don't want to be on the planet anymore and I don't care about accomplishing a damn thing. Then the next day I feel normal. Yes, it's bipolar disorder. Medications can help you.

Yeah I usually get it in stretches of a couple of weeks of feeling up and then a couple of weeks of low-level depression, but my regular use of cannabis has almost totally blown that pattern away, which is probably why I like weed so much anyways

Does anyone of you get easily influenced by not-so-significant events. I mean something minor getting to you in an emotional manner.

Only when I'm in a depressive state. Then it can be real minor things yeah, utterly stupid things like a last minute change of plans or something

YES!! IN general, I'm a very passionate person. Something small will be shown on the news, and then I will tell all my friends about how big of a deal it is and I will be explaining in a very passionate way. And they are just like, "Um that's not a big deal." And I'm like, "YES IT IS!!!"
