Idea for an contest in the gourmet/medicinal section !

I have got an idea for a contest in the gourmet/medicinal section: The one that is able to fruit a new species reliable will win a price ! There are a lot of species that taste very good, but no one has ever tried or succeeded in getting to fruit them. Right now I can think of Armillariella mellea and Giant puffball, but I am sure there are a lot of other species. If someone is able to get them to fruit reliably this person get's a price. The prize should be very high, so that the best of our shroomers will accept the challenge. This would help the mushroom community ( new species to breed ), the person that has won ( fame and honor and a *big* prize ) the forum ( something going on ) and the sponsors ( something new to sell ). There would be remaining this questions: - What is the prize - The species that are allowed in the contest - How to control that the new tek is really working What do you think ?

Sounds nice, but providing a big prize is quite problematic. It should be in the same range as the one that made Lindbergh fly over Atlantic. Maybe it could go like this: each contestant would pay some money to get the culture and all collected money would go to the first who cultivates it.

Yea, such a big prize would be great . What do our sponsors think of such a contest ? Wouldn't they be willing to help out ? Or what kind of prize would be appealing to people to take the challenge ? Maybe a mushroom seminar at Staments farm ? Maybe he would sponsor something like this ? Any ideas ?

Lets see if we can get a sponsor to donate a fair amount of stuff and in return they get a spore print of the winners mushroom which they can then sell. Maybe the strain could be named after the winner :-)

Sounds good, I cloned a late fall oyster this fall and just transferred it to sawdust, not that its a good edible, it is different.
Even though it looks good on the bird seed and recovered after I shook it had citrus smell, so I may be forced to get some antibacterial agar.
Anyway I have some dried A. oystibe from last year and few blewits from this year. I'm sure others have some dried edibles laying around as well. With some antibacterial agar you can start mushroom from spore on the gills.
I started reishi this way, I think it too has bacterial contaminates.
I think a good prize would be a jar of antibacterial agar.
A culture would have ot be sent to others to try to repeat the process, once it had been fruited.

I say we decide on a mushroom and distribute spore prints, then see who can grow the biggest or whatever

I am thinking of mushrooms that have never been grown before like giant puffball, Armillariella mellea or Ganoderma tsugae just to name some of them. Does anybody know some other edible/medicinal species that have never been grown before ?

Growing a mushroom species that no one has ever grown before is quite a project. You're talking about a lot of work. A LOT of work. Of course, I do not want to discourage anyone. You're also right that the prize should be great. But in my opinion, the only prize worthy of such a project is a P.h.D. in mycology.

I suspect that Giant puffball is very very hard to cultivate, but there are many others that shouldn't be such a problem. I suggest Kuehneromyces mutabilis for beginning. It's parameters are not described in the litareture and it's a good edible. Cultivation shouldn't be too hard (I'd say comparable to Flamullina velutipes) and I have a nice culture that I could share with others. I have some others that were not described by Stamets: Armillarea tabescens, Laetiporus sulphureus & Macrolepoiota procera - but they're in cold storage so I'd have to revive them first.

I think Kuehneromyces mutabilis was cultured a lot during World War II. You can easily get some descriptions and spawn here and here and here for example.
Maybe we should devide this contest into two categories:
1. Isolating and developing a good strain of a new species.
2. Isolating and developing a good strain of an already cultured species.
What do you think ?

I think that's spot on. The majority of this community work with spores because psilocybian cultures are illegal. Showing a strain isolation from start to finish would be a great addition to the community. I have had a strain development project in the planning for a couple months. I cannot decide on a species. On edit: The best prints are those that came from cultivated mushrooms. Wild prints take more substrains and possibly more generations to find a good isolate. But here is the BEST source for spores (imho), Florida Mycology Research Center. Run by Steven Peele, it probably is the largest spore bank that sells to the public.

this sounds good.. say pick 4 or 5 non cultivated species to choose from (that we can find decent cultures of) and have an entry fee (culture price + x-tra) have the x-tra from the entry fee + what ever donations we get from sponsors as the prize.
only problem i see is varifieing the success... not all of us have digi's to document w/ pictures.
all in all i think this is a great idea. and i'm all for it!

For verifying the winner could send the isolated strain together with a detailed culture description to one or more persons. These persons then could try out if the strain and the tek really work.
