Forest exploring
    #22249604 - 09/17/15 05:33 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Had a wonder down a new place and while walking found this little wooden foresters retreat wich is in the middle of nowhere!built for public use, surrounding this area are fields and fields of pastures wich could hopefully soon fruit me some libs!
Anyway found a few other types while walking and never before realised what good photography shrooms make!

one way, an old fashioned way, to make charcoal is to pile the wood (in a specific way) and light it (in some specific way) while covering the whole pile with turf/sod/dirt.

the pile is vented out the top and slow burns in very low oxygen so it is an incomplete burn, sometimes for like a week or more depending on the size of the pile.  then you uncover it to harvest the charred wood AKA charcoal.

relatives of mine still did this up until about 1980 or so in Lorton, VA on the family farm (that's now a subdivision).  they did it to make charcoal to burn in the smokehouse...a 10x10 smokehouse where you could scrape a cm of quite solid soot off the inside walls with a pocket knife when not in use since it had been fired for about 80-90 years.

ETA: wish i had been about 15-20 years older when the farm was sold and could have transported that smokehouse to my house.
