I had what I think was HPPD for about a month. Nothing mental really happened, but I did get quite a bit of visual disturbances like if I looked at edges of tiles too long they would start moving. Also static vision that I still have to a minor degree; but the static vision is so un noticeable that I can't tell if I've had this before my first trip.

I think HPPD can be very self induced. The more you think about it, the more it will effect you (try to not let it bother you)

My theory of HPPD is that you've always had the visual disturbances, but never noticed them, and psychedelics make you aware of these disturbances.

Here are the conditions that will tell you if you have HPPD:

- Subjects experience drug-like sensory disturbances while not under the influence of any drugs.
- The disturbances interfere with work, school, social settings, or other areas.
- There are no other physical or mental conditions that account for the disturbances (lesions, visual epilepsy, schizophrenia, dementia, etc.)

What causes HPPD?

HPPD is defined to be caused by taking 'hallucinogenic' drugs, but its root cause is poorly understood. Dr. Henry Abraham ( a leading researcher in this area) believes that HPPD may be partially genetic though he says that he knows of no published evidence [personal communication - tacovan]. It seems to be most commonly related to LSD use, perhaps because LSD is the most common hallucinogen, but there are also reports of HPPD being caused by other psychedelics such as mushrooms, MDMA, MDA, 2CT7, 5-MEO-DiPT, etc. There are a few people who have HPPD-like symptoms who have never taken any drugs, but the definition of Hallucinogen Persisting Perceptual Disorder does not include these individuals.
...

Can anyone clarify for me why if there are "no other physical or mental conditions that account for the disturbances" that "there are a few people who have HPPD-like symptoms who have never taken any drugs."

The symptom list initially makes it sound like there is no way to experience this condition without taking drugs, then goes on to say that there are people who experience the same symptoms without taking drugs.

Has there been research into people who experience this condition without taking drugs?  Do they have any commonalities with those who take drugs and experience it?
This almost sounds like claims that cannabis causes schizophrenia because cannabis exacerbates the symptoms of schizophrenia.

If a group of people is experiencing this without taking drugs, that seems far more important to study than just saying they don't count because the name for the symptoms is supposed to imply that only drugs can cause it.
For instance, do drugs make these peoples condition worse, cancel it out, or does it stay the same?

Really? haha O no things breathe if I stare at them. Who cares I think its awesome and its definitely something that goes away with prolonged abstinence from all drug usage.

First of all its not random. It depends on the person, the cercumstances, and the drugs taken.
Second, for most people it goes away after long periods of being sober.

Your being a fucking cock sucker because your one in a million HPPD sufferers whose got it bad, crying about it, and now your trying to say everyone can get it.

Fucking fear porn at its finest

One in a million heh?  :smugjerry: I don't even have it bad that's the funny thing. I don't have tracers or stuff like that, just neon shaps on white walls and stuff like that.

In the other HPPD thread there were probably around ten people that admitted to having it.

Oh, I have had issues with things like this since I was little kid -- moving neon shapes, and they would continue even with my eyes closed.

Was not aware that people credited this to psychedelic drugs.

And these voices probably went away when you weren't stoned. Cause they were happening, because you were stoned.

My theory kind of explains that

Maybe some people have slight visual disturbances, but the few of those who have it don't notice it without the aid of psychedlics

Compared to the long-term withdrawal symptoms of methamphetamine, HPPD is a breeze.

I got HPPD over a year ago when I was doing way to much RCs. Shits annoying sometime, like when I'm too anxious or its really bright outside, but it can be pretty cool too. Like in awesome nature settings .

I don't know if it's fair to call it "withdrawal" but WAY back when, when I did meth for a few years and then quit, my brain chemistry was pretty fucked for at least a couple years.

I don't think HPPD is strictly visual...I have always had natural visual distortions...

And schitzophrenia has more to do with delusions, though I think some compounds can induce a schitzophrenic state, methamphetamine being one of them.

Methamphetamine is a dopeamine releasing agent and a dopeamine re-uptake inhibitor, so it floods the synapse with dopeamine, then prevents its "re-uptake" or removal from the synapse by blocking the re-uptske transport....this free floating dopeamine destroys the neurons, when you see "holes" in methamphetamine users brains, it was primarily this action that caused them...and yes this damage can be permanent, id say meth will give you long lasting or permant psychosis before any psychedelic....

There you have it folks. Theres the real problem.
A brain that experienced heavy Meth use, or regular Meth use, damages the brain to a point where it is more susceptible to gain HPPD from taking psychedelics.

I had never done meth when I got HPPD. I had only smoked weed before I got HPPD and I got it on my first mushroom trip.

It is not very uncommon though. In the first few pages of the other HPPD thread at least ten people admitted to having it.
