Excellent choice with promix, it's become my go to substrate base. Mix a good amount of perlite to it and you're golden. Good luck

Alright so I uprooted the 2 plants. Trimmed the root system heavily (partly to remove that moss and partly because a lot ripped when I pulled them out). Replanted them in promix with perlite mixed in. Watered them. Took one cutting and dipped it in rooting hormone then left it in wet perlite.
I also fertilized my peyotes, bridges, pedros, torchs and pereskiopsis so maybe I'll have some nicer pics to show you guys soon.
I have a bunch of baby peyotes and pereskiopsis and still haven't ever done a successful graft.
I really destroyed the roots on the salvias. Wasn't trying to remove that much it all kinda fell apart. Both were left with basically one really long root each. I know sticking something without roots (aka the cutting) in a moist environment is asking for issues because they can't drink yet but that perlite will dry out soon. Going to just moisten it from time to time and hopefully a root grows. Thanks for all the help but as always additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

You shouldn't ever remove roots on a plant unless you're trying to purposely stunt it's growth(eg, bonsai) and especially when they're weak and not doing well. Hopefully they will recover and do well!
As for the cuttings, make sure you change that water every night. Shake up the water real good to enrich it with oxygen. I don't know why, but all of the cuttings I've done this with grew out roots within a week. I haven't done this with the cutting I took recently and I'm well into week 2 without sign of roots.

I needed to cut out the algae and the roots encompassed the entire thing. Also fell apart really easily. They are old plants and the root systems were big but the plants are almost dead and have barely any leaves so the roots they have left will hopefully be enough to sustain their like, 4 leaves.

Mine do well when I water them with my slightly acidic well water. I would watch the ph on the water that you use.

I was actually just about to ask about pH. Like I mentioned I grow cacti, and I heard from someone with a lot of experience that he waters his peyotes and pedros with water he's adjusted to around pH 6 if I can recall correctly. I began using phosphoric acid to lower the pH of my tap water and it really seemed to help my cacti. I guess I'll water my salvias with pH 6ish water from now on.

The one on the left is the cutting. I really hope it roots. I'm going to resurrect my garden thread tonight to post some new pics of my other plants which don't make me look as incompetent as a gardener.

Put it into a high humidity area so those leaves don't wilt too fast. Like a humitidy dome or something. You can slowly acclimate a healthier plant to your home later.

just from looks, i would guess overwatering and possibly root rot. how wet is that soil? What is it made out of? how often do you water?

They were just transplanted. I don't remember what old soil they were in before. Part of how they're looking is just the shock of being transplanted in such a weak state.

I'm pretty sure they had root rot from how quick the roots fell apart. The cutting is looking okay. The plants are looking like death . They've been in the new soil since Thursday. One of the pots has gone dry, not sure how long to wait between waterings. The soil they were in before was dense and covered with some kind of green growth which made it dry out slowly. Now they are in looser soil with perlite in clay pots so they're going to dry a lot quicker. Pics to come. They look like shit though.

I feel the cutting and one of those plants has a chance ( the last pic). His soil is dry now like I said not sure how often to water. I removed most of his root mass.

The cutting in the pot with succulents looks very healthy. I hope it roots for you. Watering is pretty easy to get down. Here's what I do, and it seems to work great for me.
Step 1: wait until leaves began to droop slightly Step 2: water Step 3: repeat step 1 For me, this ritual is done every 7 to 10 days. It has kept my plants alive, but I don't know if it has had any dire health effects.
Root rot seems to be really difficult to get if your plants are on a soil mix that stays aerated(which can easily be done by just shaking the shit out of a bottle of water before you dump some on them).
As for water, I use just cheap distilled water from the local grocery store. I'll be using melted snow this winter though if my cutting ever takes off.

I understand the logic behind waiting until they look like they are thirst but I'm wondering if their pots get completely dry between waterings?

The pots will not be completely dry when they begin showing signs of needing water.

Alright thanks. I know I was over watering before but yesterday one of them was in soil that was completely dry (you could have just poured it out) and so I gave it a splash of water. Does anyone else think I should be acidifying my tap water (it comes out pretty close to 7)

Honestly, from what I can see it just looks like over watering. I wouldn't really worry about pH unless your tap water is super acidic or basic, which I doubt. As long as its somewhere near 6 you should be fine. As far as cuttings go I prefer a water reservoir with an air stone (they are cheap just go to your local pet store/walmart) But the cutting looks promising in the perlite, it's just going to need a lot of attention because perlite drys out really quick. Good luck man!
Btw those loph buttons look fantastic
