ADHD
    #2224826 - 01/07/04 02:54 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have nothing interesting to post. All the posts seem to be about God right now. I'm wearing out on that subject. It's serious to me, and it's making my brain hurt.

So here's a topic that is of interest to me: ADHD.

Is it a gift? Or is it a brain disorder?

There are people with attention problems, but nothing to merit ADHD. I've known lots of people who were on medication for it, but I think their real problem was too much television.

Well, wanna hear a story?  No?  Okay, going to tell it anyways.

Most people hear how ADHD is a deficit.  A detriment.  ADHD people forget to do things, lose things, get lost, etc.  That's what stands out for the most part.

Here's the gift...(for me, anyways.  The gifts are different for each ADDer.)

I read really fast.  I read shogun in a day.  I can read an inch-thick file 5 minutes before walking into court, on a case I've never heard of before, on a case of the type I've never handled before, 5 hours late, and win the trial.

ADDers also can be excellent to have around during a crisis.  Something's fucked up?  Call an ADDer!  We're so used to fucking things up and having to quickly fix the fuck up, that in any crisis, we're a blessing!

And I agree!!!

But that doesn't mean that there aren't legitimate people in the world with ADHD!!!

There are 50 diagnoses that can mimic ADHD. But I have the REAL THING!!!

And it's a gift!

Ed, how many people do you know that there only problem was too much t.v.?

I don't watch hardly any t.v. I've never seen a Seinfeld show. I really don't watch t.v. at all. Nothing.

Studies have linked television to decreased attention span. I guess that was all I was saying.

Skorpivo, I admit I didn't read the entire thread, but I've read this thread before. Thank you for giving the link. How is this related to ADHD? I'm not catching the connection.

The only thing I can contribute about ADHD is that sometimes people that have it demand that you be instantly interesting. :smirk:

And, no, there is definitely NOT a gun held agansit my head. Please believe me.

Yes, I think it (like everything in life) has both an up side and a down side.

The down side? It is much harder, if not completely impossible, to choose what we pay attention to.

The up side? People with ADD/ADHD often have some of the strongest focusing skills around...given the chance to use them. It's just that we work at a different speed and with different habbits than "normal" people. Give me the right thing and I can focus to such an extent that nothing around me exists anymore except the problem in front of me. My problems are in sustaining attention towards something that is moving at a slower pace than I would normally work at.

A blessing and a curse, much like intelligence

Well, I'm glad you posted the link. There are some people that think ADDers don't really have anything that is "wrong" with them, that ADDers are from stars, or another planet, or something. Someone I know thinks it will be ADDers who "save the world" when 2012 begins. Or the stuff leading up to the great changes we are supposed to experience over the next 10 years.

And what I notice is how different ADDers' brains, work differently.  I have several ADD people in my life who can multi-task.  They can listen to you talk, work on something on the computer, and work on some paperwork, plus have a few other things going, and they can do it all at once.

I can only focus on one thing at a time.  If I am reading, and you start talking to me, I won't be able to hear you.  If you want me to listen to you, you'd have to get me to stop reading first.  It's like having a really small line to my CPU.  Only 1 thing in, and 1 thing out.  That's as far as my "sense" are concerned.

However, I recently heard about a study that multi-taskers are more likely to get Alzheimer's when the get older.

There are also ADDers who notice everything in the world going on around them.  They can't shut anything out.  Then there are those of us that don't notice anything, because we're so busy thinking.  Focusing.

What makes me sick is parents putting their kids on Amphetamine-type drugs for ADHD without knowing the dangers/consequences of the drug.  :shake:
