i'm trying to plan down the line. anyone know of a good way short of buying an automatic water dispenser to keep plants hydrated while not home? i know i'm going to be away for a good 4 days and would like my plants to not die while im away
do those orbs with the long spouts that hold water in them work ok? the ones where you stick the long part in the dirt and the water stays above in a round chamber

The orbs was the first thing that popped into my head when I read your post, although I don't have any experience using them.
4 days isn't that long though, do you have plants that are on that strict of a watering schedule??
Generally what I do is have somebody come by and water things if I am going to be gone for a while... If that isn't an option you might either have to try the orbs, or set pots in a tray of water or something...

the plants will be under a pretty intense light and in an environment that is sucking out the moisture
if i germinate my seeds now, they will more than likely be still seedlings or small babies still by the time i go

I have this problem too, will be away from my seedlings for 4 nights, 5 days. I can get my sister to water them all once and im hoping thats enough over this time period. Im thinking if i turn off the heat mats it should reduce the water consumption, and this will be in a months time when the weather should be warmer, hopefully.

Set up a wick system(easily googled) or sit the pots on wet sponges in trays. The moisture gets drawn up by capillary action, similar to capillary matting. I usually just place a saucer below the plant and fill that with water if I'm away for some time. It wont do damage if it's only for a short time.

If the root system has not developed enough to reach the bottom of the pot by this time will it really matter if there's water in the saucer?

It will. Water will go up by capillarity and wet the substrate where the roots are.

I used perlite for a "wick", and think my cannabis plants survived over 10 days if I remember correctly. I have a 3 week break coming so I will be trying with a larger container/perlite.
