I was under the impression this was in the context of dating.

I mean there are huge facilites that are eing uilt and is seems these companies are expanding so they must be making quite a bit of money right? once the price of potatos gets high enough and the technology is there you etter bet theyll be people growing potatos under lights.
and if you've not eaten hydroponically grown produce then you will promote the shit out of it, it's a fad

if you say so
but maybe you can tell us how a few window boxes and rooftop gardens are going to feed a city, I mean people can invest in some huge warehouse that cranks out vegetables that taste like ass but that kind of defeats the desire to get away from "industrial agriculture" and the use of all of those lights certainly will not help to reduce a carbon footprint or keep prices low... this actually sounds to me like a means of starving the poor out of existence and making a new class of poor out of the middle class because all of their work will be going to buy over priced, shit tasting foods

they're LEDs; they probably use 150W per m². That's like an incandescent light bulb
and who says they taste bad? personally i've never tried but you can control growth conditions better
other than that i see no reason they should taste any different

if you have ever bought whole live basil from the market, i can almost guarantee that it was grown through aquaponics.
Naturally, any use you can get from the sun is great, and greenhouses are perfect for vertical farming. In urban areas, quite a bit of food could be produced atop commercial and industrial buildings without any artificial light. (hell, there's a group of guys growing wine grapes in NYC). But even in areas where it is only feasible to go indoors, the actual cost of electricity can be kept quite low if the initial equipment cost is paid upfront. Also, the thing to keep in mind with aquaponics is that if done right, you can stock 1/2 lb of fish per 1 gal. of water. you can also install a 2 part digester system to break down your fish waste solids and organic vegetable waste into usable methane which you can burn in a Natural Gas turbine to provide at least some of the electricity for your facility. NY state has subsidies for dairy farmers to do exactly that on a large scale, and they produce energy surpluses.
Edit: the liquid left over after the 2 part digester has worked it's magic is an excellent fertilizer that can be bottled and sold if desired.
Some vegetable waste can be used to grow crickets or cockroaches to supplement your fish feed(and offset costs). also, american brown cockroaches(the ones with the wings) are worth $20 per lb dried. mostly to cosmetic companies.
Fish can be processed on site into a value added product. example: 1 lb tilapia-worth maybe $0.75 to $1 per lb wholesale. 6 oz. smoked vacuum sealed and labeled tilapia-worth maybe $2-$4 wholesale.
