information pool: aeruginascin

http://www.cognitiveliberty.org/shulgin/adsarchive/aeruginascin.htm

interesting read, anyone hear of aeruginascin or know anything more about it?  when i get home to my merck index ill spit out what it says.  considering this chem apparently modifies the intensity  of psilocybin this is pretty interesting.

the archive of questions and answers by Dr. Shulgin(author of pihkal/tihkal) is extremely interesting

(post may not be in correct forum, appologies in advance)

Get these articles while they're hot, as they have a bad habit of disappearing after awhile. I had a hard time finding the first one since my journal service doesn't include Planta Medica.

This looks very, very interesting!!!

Anybody have any information about the cultivation of Inocybe aeruginascens?

Please tell me there is a source for this species!?!

Ask MJ - he is adament that it has no affect on psychoactivity. I dont know whether he bases that comment on any specific evidence.

It probably can't pass the blood-brain barrier. But it still might have interesting peripheral effects.

Yeah I also read it cannot pass the blood brain barrier, due to the ammonium component.

That's all just speculation. Gartz isolated it though so you would think that he would have tested that aspect. OTOH in the paper he used only small amounts for the experiments.

The extraction and chromatographic separation of aeruginascin is described in the paper, so it wouldn't be all that hard to get some pure aeruginascin to test out. All you'd need is a supply of Inocybe aeruginascens, some common solvents, and a chromatography column.

Muscarine (another quaternary ammonium compound) can't pass the BBB, but it's quite polar.

Aeruginascin is fairly polar, but if it is dephosphorylated in the same way that psilocybin is, then it's dephosphorylated counterpart would be significantly less polar.

Choline is actively transported across the BBB. It has a quaternary ammonium on one end and a hydroxyl group on the other end. That makes it somewhat similar to dephosphorylated aeruginascin. Perhaps the choline BB transport mechanism would also transport aeruginascin!

Here are a few snips...

"The BBB choline transporter transports choline, and perhaps other quaternary ammonium molecules."

"CMT systems for hexoses, monocarboxylic acids such as lactic acid, neutral amino acids such as phenylalanine, basic amino acids such as arginine, quaternary ammonium molecules such as choline, purine nucleosides such as adenosine, and purine bases such as adenine, are shown in Figure 5, which represents the luminal membrane of the brain capillary endothelium."

"It is suggested that hematoencephalic barrier of mice is permeable to quarternary ammonium compounds. The differences in the central effects of the tertiary and quaternary ammonium bases in animals should not be attributed to the varying hematoencephalic barrier."

So just the quaternary ammonium component doesn't necessarily mean that it can't pass the BBB.

Ah... well I was just regurgitating from the PDF anyway, haha. Haven't done my neuro chem degree just yet.
