halfassed attempt at LC yields strange result
    #22245304 - 09/16/15 10:49 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

so i tried to make some liquid medium with maple syrup.
it seems to work well enough, as there is plenty of stuff growing in the liquid that looks like myc.

so then i decide to do a test on some pf jars and see if indeed that's what it is.
i injected some of the LC into a pf jar to the side of it so i could see it's progress.
so now i have some white stuff growing around the edges of the squirt, and the middle of it
seems to be doing something else entirely.

i'm pretty sure this is Ps. cyanescens, but there is a minor chance i mixed it up with cubensis.
the (presumably) cubensis jars don't seem to be doing much yet, but my incubation temps
are kind of low. (20-21C)

i also have some jars i injected with Ps. cyanescens spores and they are producing the same
sickly looking mycelium.

so my questions are:
wtf is going on here?
i guess maple syrup sucks as an LC medium? or should i thin the mix or something?

and: is Ps. cyanescens myc supposed to look like that?
and: is there any contam that looks like sloppy myc and grows at the same speed or slower?

How much did you dilute the syrup before using it?

i am guessing it was about half a teaspoon per 500ml of water.

That would be.... a reasonable amount.  If everything was clean, mycelium should be what was in there.

I'll be fucked if I can distinguish clean cyan growth though, sorry.

the LC is questionable since it's my first time messing with it.
but i have some jars injected with spores where the 'myc' looks the same.

so, even if my LC mix was way off, it still shouldn't look like this right?

i am starting to think i received 2 dirty syringes in a row :frown:

oh well at least my azure spawn is going well.
guess i will start reading up on agar...

If you inoculated an LC with spores then I wouldn't count on it being clean.  MAYBE if the spores were taken from an invitro fruit, using impeccable technique, but otherwise, too much risk.

yeah i did, but also used them straight on jars
and the result was the same sickly looking stuff pretending to be mycelium.

next time i will try getting some clean myc out of a cake.

is there an agar recipe that works without a PC?

I'm not sure, I've heard of some success with the microwave, not sure if it was Violet or blackout that did that, or both.  Really only works for no-pour.
