Why prevent suicide?

Simply put, why prevent it? If the person truly wants to end their own life who are we to stop them? Isn't it selfish to keep them around when they don't want to exist any more?

It is my understanding that some are grateful for those who intervened, in retrospect.

I think most of the time, it is in a person's best interest not to commit suicide. However, I think there are certain scenarios in which it would be appropriate to encourage and grant it. I feel this pertains principally to certain terminal conditions, in which a person knows s/he is going to die, and wants to control it. Euthanasia. I feel it is primitive of us to outlaw this very humane practice. And some people descend into a hell they'll never get out of, and they know it. I have no problem with people of this type wanting to 'check out,' as it were. But I would stress that in the vast majority of cases, it would be in one's best interest not to do it.

I think the common attitude is that suicidal people are mentally ill and should be protected from themselves.

As a couple of guys here know, I have struggled myself with this question of late. I talked to a lot of people about this exact subject, so I will surmise my findings below (these are a culmination of the overriding opinions I received from others, as well as my own):
As DQ stated, I firmly believe that in the case of a terminal physical illness or crushing disability which is uncurable, that euthanasia should be allowed, should the person desire it. I would happily assist a loved one in this situation and will take myself out/have someone assist me if I ever fall prey to either of these situations (digitas in Switzerland does the lot for approx £7000).
However, in the case of a mental illness, the situation becomes a lot more 'grey'. I have come to the conclusion that in this situation I would always (having done so recently after much questioning) intervene. This is because mental illness is a lot more transient. I don't believe that a mental illness can be described as 'terminal' - brain plasticity is well documented, and there are innumerable treatments available for mental illness, with new ones being discovered all the time (a brilliant example of this is the use of psychedelics which have recently made it back into the scientific spectrum of available treatments).
So there you have it. I wracked my brains over this thing for weeks, and I feel I've come to a pretty solid conclusion of how I will act in these cases. Obviously this is not fixed, but it's my current conclusion.

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

You've already received the best answers from others. A temporary aberrant mental condition that contradicts the biological imperative to survive might be fixed. But in certain cased of terminal illness or illnesses of an increasingly painful and debilitating course, one might well consider suicide. But then again, look as Stephen Hawking. How many people would want to continue to live in that physical condition, but amazingly, he has nevertheless been able to come up with some important hypotheses (although I hope his predictions about humanity are way off because they are dreadfully depressing).

I find his character remarkable, and his conclusions not so depressing at all. If consciousness stops or I'm being absorbed into Consciousness, I'll take it.... Basically there's nothing to fear about death, imho, wish people would stop doing it so much.... Vibe at a higher frequency, it's only your mind that lets his theory be depressing, as it's just one more way of making sense of the universe, and isn't it most curious?
The only thing that upsets me about suicide is the karmic relationships w/ lovers and parents, people who depend and rely on you for emotional or financial support. If you don't have those karmic bonds, opt out if you wanna.
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

some people want to end their life just they had a bad day. others which are in ugly structures just should change people around them and want for suicide goes away... ... other people are just ill and need the right medicine! ... wanting suicide is just wanting transcendence without knowning. so let them feel: reality can be acepted. you are home. enjoy.

This. It's a permanent solution for what may be a temporary problem.

You HAVE to be mentally ill (biologically) to want to kill yourself. Something is very wrong there.

I agree, except it is not wrong, it is wild in the gariden (understand garden, but garden is more than daft and gray, it is with grace and golden and splendor (or spectacular (I don't remember))

What is people's promise of things getting better turn out to be lies and you realize it was a mistake not to do it?

That's a corker of a nonsensical statement.
Urr, so then you do it?
