i now only get the drain pans from harbor freight that actually have the locks on it so it is fully capable of being transported to the parts store for recycling on its own.

Fuck them indeed. I got a better oil pan since I'll have to do my Sonata's oil pretty soon as well, came from Walmart. It's one of the rigid ones with an actual pouring spout. Won't help me not miss the pan, but at least I won't get shit everywhere while trying to pour it into a bottle.

They did solve it. It's called Jiffylube Take it to them and let them make the mess. If I wasn't so damned cheap and didn't overall enjoy working on cars, that's what I'd be doing.

but yeah, i get it, let some other poor sap do it... i wish i could bring myself to that point, but for some damned reason i just figure it will be a hassle talking to them.

oil changes are easy and cost about the same as doing it at the shop. The difference is that if you do it yourself, you can use the best oil there is. The shop uses crap oil or recycled oil, you never really know, but im pretty sure its probably not full synthetic.
I had started changing my oil and realized the filter wrench didnt fit but I had already drained the oil. FUCK. I grabbed the filter tight and managed to remove it with my hand. Make sure you grab the right sized filter wrench.
5QT Full Synthetic is about $25, oil filter is $5-$10 and grab and air filter if you need it $10-$20. And your all done and you dont have shit oil in your car!

Or you can do it the old fashioned way if in a pinch.. Get a screwdriver and hammer it straight through the walls of the filter, presto, instant oil wrench. Put a pan or something underneath the filter first just in case.
That is if you have good access to it anyways. The one on my Mazda is crammed way the hell up almost dead center in the engine and is a pain in the ass to get to with just your hands. Luckily it wasn't torqued down and I managed to just undo it with my hands.

Damn. Just got back from work a little bit ago. Definitely didn't expect all these replies in a thread about changing oil in a car. I appreciate it so much everyone. All your guys' replies helped & gave me some things to think about. Also some replies made me laugh out loud... some replies kind of scared me. Now I'm sort of apprehensive about changing the oil in my car though. Don't want to risk a car falling on me over trying to save $50... Plus I don't have a car jack which I'm assuming is going to cost over $50 alone. Then I'll have to buy the oil, the oil filter, & a couple other things. Considering I'm going to be spending more money just getting all the supplies I'm now leaning towards just taking it into a shop & getting it done by someone who knows what they're doing... FUCK... Once again thanks so much all of you.
Lmfao at Niffla's comment "OP just PM'd me and said that his engine fell out when he was trying to change it".

Dude you can get a Heavy Duty bottle jack and a jack stand for under 30 bucks, 5 quarts of oil for 16-18, and a filter for 5-10. Once you do it yourself, your gonna feel good, because you get the experience under your belt, and you learn, and your good for the rest of your life. It really is easy, and it takes less than 10 minutes. Youtube videos will show you how simple it is if you don't believe me, don't let people's replies scare you. If anyone is telling you it's difficult, it's because they are either lazy or don't know how to do it themselves yet.
Man how old are you if you don't mind me asking?
This is something you should learn when you get your first car, and for sure by the time your 18 or 20 you should have it down. How long have you been driving and whose been changing your oil?

It's really not that difficult or dangerous as long as you know what you're doing. Which doesn't mean much really. Just keep in mind basic physics. Cars not stable, it falls down. I personally don't work under jacks or jack stands because of all my stupidity in the past, but lots of people do. When you get it up, shake the hell out of the car if you're unsure about it. All the times I've nearly had a car fall on me were from setting it up in a way where if I had shaken the car as a test first, I would've already seen the issue. But when you're young you feel invincible so it never really entered my mind that a car would fall on me.
If you don't already have a jack, then I hope you have AAA. What are you gonna do when you blow a tire? IMO every car at the bare minimum should have a jack, a spare, a 4way tire iron (the single ones suck ass and can strip nuts easily. The 4 way is easy to really torque down on it to remove the nut without stripping it) a pair of jumper cables and a basic tool set in the trunk at all times. I keep a lot more than that in mine though. If you're gonna work under a car, at the minimum do it on jack stands. They're cheap as hell. You just park the car on some level concrete, jack the car up and "rachet" the stand up as high as it will go, then let the jack down and do the other side.
Changing the oil is literally as simple as taking off one bolt that IME is never hard to get to, as far as I know the drain bolt is always extremely accessible. Take it out, let the oil drain, plug it back up, wipe the area down, replace the filter, then put in a few quarts of oil, let it sit, check the level, and add more as needed.

It's not that changing your oil is difficult (it takes about 30 minutes tops), it's that you would end up paying about $35-$40 for all the materials anyway. Unless you establish a trade line and start buying oil in bulk, you're just not going to get it as cheap as the shops and might as well shell out the $10-$15 to avoid getting your hands dirty.
It is a fair way to get into automotive repair in general, though and could save you a great deal of money in the future... If people only knew how easy it is to fix a bad AC unit, alternator, or to change your own brakes...

Well if you change the oil yourself you're guaranteed to be using decent oil. I don't really trust those shops to spare no expense in the oil they're putting in. They gotta make a profit somehow. It's probably through cheap parts.
Plus it's not like those shops always get shit right. My grandpa's truck was nearly destroyed twice by those quick shops. One didn't do anything but hand tighten the oil drain plug and it soon got lost, was probably just a miracle the engine didn't end up seizing. The other was a tire rotation or something (don't quite remember) but they did the same fucking thing with the lug nuts on the wheels. Was a good thing he was only doing about 30 when the wheel came off. Completely fucked the body behind the wheel though.
And no they were 2 different shops we never again went back to either.

For me, it costs me about $55 in supplies to DIY (synthetic oil and filter).. $80 if I have my shop do it. The question is.... is $25 worth 15 minutes of my time and getting my hands dirty and having to properly dispose/recycle the oil? The answer is sometimes. I generally alternate. Every 5k I will usually do it myself and at 10k I'll pay to have someone do it. I only use LiquiMoly and the shop I go to uses the good stuff as well.

I knew a shady oil salesmen. He'd always brag bout selling people like 5000 gallons of cheap sub walmart grade oil as mobil 1 or rotella, and doing coke and banging whores and strippers with the cash he pocketed
Yeah, I think I will change it myself...
Also OP, on most cars you can get away without jacking your car up. Literally all you do is
-remove drail bolt -replace drain bolt after oil drains -remove filter (make sure teh old seal/oring comes off with it you don't wanna double them up) -replace with new filter - add oil - start engine, give a quick look under car to make sure there are no leaks, recheck oil with engine off
That's it. It takes me 15 minutes start to finish including clean up and that's me taking my time.

i know its illegal but i have railroad cross ties lining my driveway. i paint the used oil onto them to keep them from rotting. sometimes i use it to start bonfires. it can also be used to get rid of mange on dogs.
the proper way is to take it to a certified oil disposal site

Great point, Jiffy Lube and other chains are notorious for employing people that know nothing about cars to work on cars... Not good.
At least a mechanic might say something if oil is leaking out of your head, like a sieve. Those grease monkeys will scratch their asses and send you on your way.
