or a garage with a ramp enterence, then you just drive up to the top and put the emergency brake on and block the wheels, altho u might not get all the old oil out this way.
also u don't want to use stands on blacktop the blacktop can crack/sink in, then your skull does the same.
the other worry is with both stands and ramps, that shit is made in china now so your just as likely to die from them as well when they fail.
so ideally you want to drive onto ramps, put stands in multiple places under the frame, put a jack stand in there somewhere, and a couple cinder blocks on each side of your head, and bring your cell phone with you incase you get stuck so you can call your wife or children to tell them everything was made in china and everything failed except the cinder blocks but you failed and didn't put them in the right spot to catch the car and you would have saved a lot of money by just calling a different oil shop

Very true. Doing it yourself isn't hard and saves you $20 at most. I personally think it's a bitch to put my car on a stand and shit like jiffy lube will vacuum my car too so
however they will also sometimes lose the cap off the oil and drop it into your engine. Then when they go to fill your coolant up they will use the wrong kind for your car, and they won't bother to bleed the system so when they do fill it up you'll get air in the system and that will cause problems, and if you tell them to grease your fittings you'll go home and realize all they really did was grease your steering wheel

Yes that's true. You also have to take your oil in and pay to have it disposed of. Certain shops are barely more expensive if at all, but it does pay to get in the habit of doing these things yourself because it makes you more attentive and observant with the inconsistencies. I like working on my car. Only thing I haven't done with my current car is replace the idler pulley but that's only because it was a tight spot and didn't have the space to do it. On my last car I changed the struts, exhaust, ball joints, wheel cylinders, brake lines, gas lines. The steering rack was a bitch because the only options were to tear up the carpet and take out the center console, then unbolt the floor panel, or drop the axel. It was a lot of work. We just dropped the axel.

u don't have to pay to dispose of old oil u getting scammed, city ordances mandate places that have to accept used motor oil. Typically the city toxic waste center, as well as certain auto parts stores

Dest said: Well if you plan on selling your car a oil change history is good to have. However you can go buy a drain pan, oil, and a new filter for roughly less than 50 bucks (gas stations also have free one time paper funnels for pouring it in). A glove and a magnet are also convenient. Also put your drain plug in and change the filter BEFORE you put any new oil back in. The same place where you get your oil changed is where you have to recycle the oil.

Surprised I can even say this, but Maka is right. It's not advisable to put them on asphalt. Asphalt is not as solid/hard as concrete is. I mean the stuff is basically just gravel held together with tar. If you have to do it on asphalt, put some thick plywood under the stands at the minimum.
I won't work on a car on jack stands though. I'll only get under my car when it's up on the ramps. Only thing I use jack stands for are things like rotating the tires. I've had some sketchy shit happen over the years when the car wasn't up on the ramps. Many life flashing before my eyes moments. At least on the ramps, when it's centered right I know the car isn't going to do anything but roll away from me at the worst case scenario.

When I was young & mind numbingly retarded (I'm still stupid, just slightly less so), I was 16 and it was my first year of driving -- I had a flat and was changing my tire...put the car on a jack, and amazingly forgot to put the emergency brake on.
As soon as I got up from under the car -- the car slid off the jack. If it would've slipped a couple of seconds earlier it might have very well killed me.

Changing oil is super easy. Go underneath the car find the nut holding the oil in the tank. Open it up and make sure you have a drip pan.

Do you actually own your own car!? Just lease, then who cares if the oil is changed?

leasing is a bigger ripoff if your paying per month your tossing money out the window, buy used, maintain it yourself, don't buy new parts fix the parts that break or get used from scrapyard. Oh and research the car first to see how many recalls it has. aka stay away from models that were shitcans from the factory
Idealy you should be buying a car that's 10-15+ years old that way by time your done fixing it up it'll be an antique and worth more
