How hard is it to change oil in a car?
    #22245156 - 09/16/15 10:07 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hello everybody. An oil change costs $50 in my area. That seems sort of high just to change some oil in a car... I have a very D.I.Y. attitude when it comes to household repairs, maintenance, & so on but I have absolutely zero knowledge on how cars work, mechanics, so on & so forth. The only thing I know how to do to a car is... wash it. I don't even know how to wax a it. :smirk: Lets say worst case scenario something goes terribly wrong & I royally fuck up-will it ruin my car? No one in my family knows jack shit about mechanics.

Is it worth the $50 to have someone who knows what they are doing change the oil?

Lol. I feel like such a noob asking this. :facepalm3:

And yeah, what the post above mine says, google oil filter location by year, make, model and engine.  Hell, write down the last 8 of you're vin and call the dealership, they'll give you a part number that'll cross over to from or something you can buy from walmart or somewhere cheap.    Find some straight up 40 weight oil, drain, replace filter, fill 4.5qts, check level....fill more if needed...Go have a cold beer in the shade.

All said and done, you should be under $20

An oil change is usually super easy to do, and $50 is steep for that. Should cost you like $30 max, except maybe if you are using full synthetic.

Well if you plan on selling your car a oil change history is good to have.
However you can go buy a drain pan, oil, and a new filter for roughly less than 50 bucks (gas stations also have free one time paper funnels for pouring it in). A glove and a magnet are also convenient. Also put your drain plug in and change the filter BEFORE you put any new oil back in. The same place where you get your oil changed is where you have to recycle the oil.

How many miles do you drive a year?

Very easy....

Find the oil and filter you need.  Buy enough oil, check your cars specs.  Turn off engine, let engine cool, put bucket under oil pan under car, unscrew oil cap under hood to let air flow, unscrew plug on oil pan, let oil drain, put screw back in, unscrew old oil filter and let drain, put new oil filter on after putting some oil around the seal, screw on hand tight, fill up with new oil...in that order..... Good to go.

Like others said it's not hard. I usually just take mine to a shop to get it changed.  The dang oil and oil filter almost cost as much as it is to have someone else so it. I just make sure they don't put the cheapo oil in it, it may cost a few more shickles but it's still worth it to me.  I used to always change it myself then just decided not too one day.

I think its cheaper to DIY, but the value of my time exceeds the differential.

Its really simple but you have to lift your car on a stand. There's a part that you unscrew and oil starts leaking. It should be indicated where to put the new oil. If you can identify the oil filter then you'll most likely manage to replace it. You might get dirty.

You may want to replace the ring that seals the oil drain plug. Also have fun changing the oil filter, they can be a bitch to unscrew and refit, depending on your particular car model. It's a straightforward job anyway. Make sure not to overfill as it'll wreak havoc on the camshaft seals apparently.

pull drain plug.  check

remove fill cap. check

replace drain plug.  check

remove oil filter. check

replace with new oil filter. check
(make sure you wet rubber gasket with a little new or old oil)

fill with proper amount of the proper oil (found in owners manual or simple google search).  check

replace oil fill cap. check

done

Its super easy but messy

You need a large container to collect the oil and its def going to get on your hands.

Most discount stores/supermarkets sell about 5 liters of oil for the same price as a repairshop charges for 1

What kinda car is it?

I agree I can make 100 bucks or more in the hour or so they have the car.

And Yeah in most all cases is cheaper to DIY but it's really not a whole lot more.  I think it cost me almost 25 bucks to do it myself and like 35 or 40 at the other place.

Other than what's been said, it's easiest if you have ramps.

Very true. Doing it yourself isn't hard and saves you $20 at most. I personally think it's a bitch to put my car on a stand and shit like jiffy lube will vacuum my car too so
