Colonizing after casing
    #22244465 - 09/16/15 05:59 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Quick question.  After you case your wbs, is there any ways/things I can to to get the casing colonized faster?  I'm on my second flush.  I had 6 early bloomers that finished in about 3 days.  But the casing has yet to start to colonize.  I have rehydrated the pan with the wbs after my first flush and re cased it.  Anything else I could do?

Casings aren't supposed to be colonized past 30%.  They don't even have to be colonized at all to perform their main function.  Guess that would've been good info 10 days ago.

Yea but if you have a strong culture/isolate then the mycelium will colonize the casing almost completely. Especially if coir/verm is used, the mycelium will have more nutrients to feed on. Kinda defeats the purpose of a "non-nutritive" layer, but it seems to work for most growers.

Well cvg isn't really the defacto casing material so it's behavior is a little...  out of the usual intended boundaries.

The first and most important function of a casing layer is to provide a microclimate for the pinning surface.  Another thing that people do, and the reason anyone lets it colonize at all,  is because cubensis also likes to pin from a low-nutrient surface for some reason.  Both of those combined will help your pinset by a large margin, though either of them separately also help a good deal.

I think it helps them serve their intended purposes.  It's hard to keep some genetics from eating all the cvg you throw at it though.

Very true indeed. I've only used peat moss/verm for my casings and have had pretty good results. Maybe I'll give cvg a shot for one of my next grows to test it out.

And also, do you think it would benefit a pan cyan bulk sub. I've only heard people using the standard peat moss/verm. :filosoraptor:
