Grafting project
    #22243987 - 09/15/15 11:40 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So I planted some loph seeds what seems like close to a year ago. I have 3 seedlings now, this being the biggest one.

So I have these indoors under a fluorescent light on a timer. There's also a trichocereus seedling in the pot. No idea what kind it it, but it's some sort of pachanoi hybrid.

I'm hoping to speed the growth and propagate these by grafting them onto pereskiopsis. The thing is, I don't know anything about pereskiopsis. I read that you can whittle down the end of a pereskiopsis, cut a hole in the bottom of the scion, and just stick it on. Is there all there is to it? Do any of you have any examples to show me or know of anything to watch out for?

EDIT: so after doing much more research my questions have been answered. I just ordered 5 pereskiopsis cuttings, and once I have them established I will graft my seedlings. Will keep this thread updated with my progress.

Good luck! Peres are really easy to keep going. They'll grow like weeds if you treat em right. Just don't grow em like a cactus. They like plenty of water, and a nice rich soil.

Alright! I got the pereskiopsis cuts in the mail today. I ordered 5, and he sent me 12 :awedance:

They look like they'll grow in any old soil, but I need to get containers for them. I also got a rad new CFL grow light in the mail today. Once I get the peres potted and under the light I'll post a pic. I've never had an indoor garden setup before so I'm really stoked. I might want to try som autoflower cannabis as well but I don't know much about autoflower plants and I have no idea where to find decent seeds. That's a project for later though...

Alright. Everything is potted. I'm gonna get another wire shelf like the one I have but other than that it's good.

Oops also if I were you before grafting to the peres you have I would plant the cutting in its own container but for the time being you should grow them out as you have them and take cuttings from them to add to your stock.

I have 5 peres in individual containers, and the other 7 in one big pot. The individuals will be for grafting, and the big pot will be for propagation. I had planned to wait another month before grafting to let the peres root, start growing, and get acclimated to the room. I also did those shallow pots so I can use some of my spare mini monos for while the grafts are knitting.

Do you all think it will take a month for the peres to be ready? From what I've seen you don't want to graft until they're showing new growth, but that's counterintuitive to me. My trichocereus tips will grow even as cuttings, so I don't think new growth is necessarily indicative of the plant being established. That said, P. spathulata seems to be one of the fastest growing cacti in existence.

Okay. Just bought another wire shelf like the one I have. Gonna put it in front of the other and I'll have a lot more space.

So it's been 10 days since I planted the peres. They all look to have recovered. They're definitely rooted. I think I will plan on trying some grafts next weekend. I have 3 lophs and a trichocereus that will all benefit from the procedure.

Okay. I've completed the grafts. I did 2 of them the other day, and the one on the left just a few minutes ago. The one on the right looks a little funky because the grafting stock oozed a lot when I cut it, but everything looks okay so I'm gonna leave it alone. Anyway it looks like I have 3 different phenotypes here so I'm excited to see how this plays out. Also, I have lots of stock for future projects. I can't wait to propagate these lophs like crazy.

Hey spaceman101 if you read this I got your PM, but it's going to take me a bit to put a list together of everything I have to offer.

:superbanana: Nice job.

Are you gonna put em in humidity or something while they heal?

I have them inside a mini mono with perlite on the bottom. They're healing up nicely. Also spotted some mold on the funky looking one so I redid the graft with different stock. I'm going to keep them in high humidity until I'm 100% sure the grafts have taken.
