scabbing initiates pups to form

So i was looking through some posts today and it seem like scabbing promotes pups. Is this true?

Define scabbing.  Like thrip damage scars or the type of scabs from dried out weeping rot?  Still, sounds like an interesting idea.

possibly both from my experience i had a cutting shipped to me that started rotting on the top from stress so i cut it off which ended up with a new pup forming there and from other peoples experiences it seems like they have similiar experiences

what you call scabbing, everyone else calls a callous. When a cactus suffers damage, it callouses over. If the damage is to the apical meristem, than it promotes pupping. It will either pup from the highest areole, or begin basal pupping.

oh ok then that makes sense so could you intentionally cut the tip a little to encourage pups?

no, new growth is generally pretty quick, but thickness and all that is based on genetics. So it may or may not have more growth. If you have an established root system, it will grow better.

Well, I think that overall, after 6 months to a year at most, cutting the tip and forcing pupping does end up producing more cacti mass than if you were to let it just go as one column. Initially of course, the pups are smaller, of course, but I'm just talking overall... Would you agree kosmo?

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
