Cactus opuntia
    #22242870 - 09/15/15 07:08 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So this is my first ever catcus. Ever since joining this site, I've really enjoyed everyone's ethno gardens and I figured I'd start one. I wa at the garden store picking up some supplies and noticed this guy for sale for 4$ I'm happy because I live alone and now I feel like I have a friend here.(also my first living anything in my house actually)

Anyone have any basic tips in caring for cacti?

This was also one of my first cacti given to me by an ex. I still have it planted in the ground and it's very big.  The only advice i have is that Glocids suck.  Do not touch that thing bare hands.  Hell, you might want to wrap some tongs in paper towel and tape if you ever up pot it.

Edit... my bad, I mistook that plant for something else... still, glocids suck.  Also, welcome to being addicted to collecting cactus.

Yeah I already learned that the hard way lol. So these grow to be quite big? The ID lable this cam with was quite vauge. Just the name and prefers sun and warmth, water well when dry.

What does water well mean? Like soak the whole pot and wait to water again until its completely dry?

Pretty much. Let it dry out nicely, then soak it till water comes out the bottom holes, rinse and repeat.

Welcome to the addictive world of cacti collections! And welcome to the EG!

'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
