Is there a phenotyping test for mushrooms?
    #22242804 - 09/15/15 06:56 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Does anyone remember in junior high science when you had to determine tree species by phenotype? You would answer questions like leaf shape, bark type, height, climate, etc. that would eliminate incorrect trees and through process of elimination would give you the correct species. First of all, what are those tests called? In my head I keep thinking litmus test, but I'm not finding that "litmus" leads to anything beyond pH scales and politics.

Secondly, does a test like this exist for mushrooms, outside of randomly searching for the mushrooms' traits? Has anyone compiled enough data to group them in such a way that you could eliminate incorrect species by choosing color, shape, spores, etc.? If it doesn't, is there a recommended field guide that stands in place of such a test?

That's so simple! And that's EXACTLY what I was looking for, thank you! Couldn't remember what the hell it was called. The MycoKey website is incredible, by the way!

I use these keys when I don't know a mushroom off the top of my head, they are a great resource.
