I agree with SM:

Whenever salespeople or whomever say trite little nice-ities to me I like to say something like "Yeah, have a lovely day!" laden with as much sincerity as I can muster and smile and suchlike.  It's not like I expect this to make much of a difference, but it usually forces them to look at me and actually notice me.  I usually even get a smile back.  It's so easy to be cheerful and it at the very least puts you in a better mood.
