First grow! Questions and excitement inside.
    #22240669 - 09/15/15 10:29 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hey everyone! I just harvested my first grow and HOLY COW. I never thought I'd quit picking. First I'd like to start off by apologizing if this isn't means to start a new thread, I'm just wanting to share my excitement with you fine peeps.

I began my little journey into cultivation by a friend introducing me to mushrooms. Quickly thereafter I stumbled upon this site and decided I wanted to cultivate. Surprisingly enough, the path hasn't fell to as many hardships as I had imagined my first grow would. After a few scares, it had turned out that all 21 of my WBS quart jars survived and thrived! My studying, reading, and thorough pressure cooking had paid off.

Once the first five quarts reached 100%, I rushed them into their new home; with coir and verm. Toppling up to 3.5 inches, and a total of 20 quarts. This is where the worry kicked in, as things stalled. I assumed I hadn't given the mycelium enough time to get affixed to the seed. Boy, I was wrong. A week and a half later, and with introduction of FAE and light; my tub was ready.

Seven days down the line, I saw my first pins. Oh the joy. It was like becoming a parent. A week later and my first harvest was ready.

I know I harvested a bit late and let spores drop on half, but I couldn't be any happier with my first harvest. The fan is 17x17inches for reference.

The three large mushrooms were swiftly torn into smaller bits for easier drying. For those wondering, this was B+ grown from a multispore syringe. Sorry for the wall of text! I do, also, have some questions I'd like to ask.

During the harvest, I left the lid open and off during the whole process. I know in a perfect world keeping the lid closed would lead to less possibility of a contamination, but should I be fretting over this? Is there any significant chance of this ruining a second flush?

Is my method of sitting the mushrooms on a fan pointed down an efficient method of drying? I hadn't planned on this many mushrooms from one harvest, or I would have bought a second fan for more room. There are areas which the mushrooms are stacked up to around two inches.

I have absolutely NO idea how much to expect this to be in dry weight, nor do I have access to a method of weighing this wet. BUT. Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and more-so, thank you all for all of the information.

EDIT: Fixed the absurd image sizes. Sorry about that.

having the lid off during harvest is no problem. the cakes are already fully colonized so contams arent an issue. dont fret. just make sure not to rough your cake up harvesting. too much damage can mak it stall and keep from recovering for a second/third round. usuall not a problim with cakes though.. just remember do dunk again.
and i know everybody has a preference but i woulda plucked those big guys b4 theey popped spores so hard.makes for an upset tummy. maybe just me..
as for the drying i cant help you. i use a dehydrator from rural king. cheap and effective.

Congratulations on your first grow!  I can definitely attest to the proud parent feeling on my first success.

I wouldn't worry too much about keeping the lid off your...I guess you're using a monotub?  Sorry if you mentioned that, I didn't see it in your post.

If you do start to see contams - I'm thinking trich in particular - remember to apply a salt paste and toss immediately.  Otherwise, you risk a high spore load in your growing area, which is no bueno for future grows.

Additionally, depending on how dry your sub is, you may want to consider a dunk.  A 3.5 inch depth is a little shallow, IMO, and may be too dry to support a good second flush.

A fan blowing on the shrooms is definitely an efficient way to dry them if you don't want to invest in a dehydrator.  If you really want to get them dry, I've heard of guys placing dessicants into sealed containers with partially dried shrooms to get them really crisp.  Kitty litter is a good choice of desiccant if you can't find silica beads.  I'd also recommend trying to space out the shrooms as evenly as possible on your drying rack to avoid thick areas.

Calculating weight without a scale isn't too hard either.  Put all of your freshly harvested shrooms in a light container to get the wet weight and then compare to objects of known weights (e.g. bags of rice, flour, etc.).  Divide by 10 and that's roughly your dry weight as shrooms are typically 90% water.

Good luck on the second flush and congrats again!

Oh definitely! If it had been in my power I would have harvested them earlier. Unfortunately I just didn't happen to be on their schedule.

As for dehydrating, my thought process is that the fan should effectively get most of the moisture out. Following that I'll be dehydrating Epsom salts and using it as a desiccant.

Yeah! I suppose I did forget to mention it was a monotub. I had originally planned to get it up to four inches, but I fell a tad short with estimating how much coir to use. I have a second tub currently in the works, and I got it perfectly up to four.

I'm definitely planning on dunking it before the second flush. It is already showing the characteristic space between the cake and walls of the tub.

Thank you both for the input and advice!
