Advice needed for opioid maintenance in UK

I am looking for peoples personal experiences for those who have done opioid maintenance in the UK. I have been addicted to poppy pods for nearly a year and although I don't necessary feel like wanting to quit now, it would save me money and be a start in the right direction with opioid maintenance. I am prescribed anti-psychotics for schizophrenia and also diazepam and zoplicone, if going on opioid maintenance meant losing my diazepam and zoplicone, I would be happy with that. I would talk to my GP about my addiction. I would try and get an appointment with a doctor I like and get well on with.
Questions for those that have experience or know the subject well:
Is every doctor/GP different in their willingness/availability to start opioid maintenance?
How long does it take to get a prescription?
Is it difficult to get on opioid maintenance?
Would my anti-psychotic medication and mental illness (past, I am stable and well now) effect a GP's decision for opioid maintenance?
I would prefer buprenorphine over methadone. I want to get clean and from what I've read, methadone is easier to abuse and the withdrawals are supposedly horrendous, which would make me more tempted to abuse the medication which I don't want.
Would going with a private medical service make the whole process easier?
Thanks for any help and advice
-------------------- Pain is temporary. It may last for a minute or an hour or a day or even a year but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it will last forever.

I don't know a whole lot about it but I know you need to go through a good amount of testing and a long regiment. Most likely loose all your narcotic percriptions before they put you even on a low dose.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
