Straw Log Quest.
    #2223968 - 01/06/04 08:29 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I am seeing the first pins develop on my straw log but the ends of it hasn't fully colonized, should I remove the bag?

What should I do?

How uncolonized are the ends?

You might just want to leave it in the bag...

patience, patience, patience... Its not gonna hurt it if you leave it in a bit longer, but taking it out before its ready could prove to be a real contaminated pain in teh arse.

Thanks for the advice I'll leave it in the bag , it probably only needs a few more days anyways.

This is how the log looks, see at the bottom there are small pis forming, they are basically forming all around the straw

This is a shot of the top, it's not colonized nor doesd it look like it will be full maybe for another 3-5 days.

Should I still wait to let it colonize?

Turn it upside down....the bottom is fully colonized! That will also compact it more.

What are you going to do with the log when it's finished? I have a small plastic bag of straw not as colonized yet as yours.

Did you use spawn or multi spore? What kind of bag is that? And how is it breathing, I dont see a filter anywhere.

This is a regular plastic bag which i got from a restaurant. Those pictures were from yesterday and today there is a lot more pins coming about, but the top is still not colonized. I turned it upside down, hope that helps..

I use spawned rye grain and mixed it into the plastic bag, after a few days I punctured holes in it to allow for breathing. I am not using a filter patch as this tek didn't ask for one, but I assume a filter patch would have worked out better. I'm doing a few experiments here I will post my results.

Thanks for the replies.

here is the latest progress with my log, notice the top is STILL not fully colonized, and what hurt me the most is I thought these were B+ on straw, but now I noticed they are too small to be B+ they are PF's on straw.

Straw log stabbed onto a cd spindle.

They were so small at first I though I had a bunch of aborts.

Hey that looks really cool and fairly easy to try out, where did you find this straw log tek at? Oh by the way, i think that using that cd spindle is an awesome idea! My turtle has about 10 of those laying around the apartment.
