Terrarium & Substrate Question
    #2223808 - 01/06/04 05:09 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

For everyone who has read the growing guide on this site..

http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml#Grow

wut do u think i am better off doing?

a) i have a bucket thats about a foot tall and i can clean it out...next i am goin to put a moist paper towel at the bottom then im goin to put the rice cake on top, then put surran wrap over the top of the bucket for moisture, should i put it on and make it airtight or with a hole to breathe or something...also the problem that i see with this is that drips would form and fall on the cake

or

b) the poor mans terrarium, usin just a 2 liter soda bottle and a moist towel, which i see no problem with, except that u are supposed to remove the top once a day and fan air in it, which can transfer some come of contaminating germ

so wut should i do, bein i have no money and i still need to buy vermiculite and brown rice flour, or, does anyone kno any cheaper method of substrate that i might have in my house?

I think if you just put a upright stick a couple CM higher than the top of the container th drip will run off to the side instead of dropping to the middle.

if ur doing A i would leave a few holes in it, or leave one side alittle uncovered. if your doing B the best way to keep contams in when your fanning is to spray a fair bit of a disinfectant IE lysol in the air b4 you fan, try and wait til it settles tho cuz im not sure if it would harm the mycelium.

yeah itll work for sure, just make sure your bottles are clean. It may have a lower yield, im not really sure. never tried it before, but it will work as long as u work clean and handle the cakes as little as possible. plus if they're totally colonized contams arent as much a concern,

Hey yarry answer me why would it have a lower yeild? This is not true. Do mot listen to this guy he has never grown a shroom before. He has never even used a syringe or inoculated or anything so please dont listen to him.

Both of them will either work. B would be easier and more convienent. Make sure you wipe the entire inside of the bottle with rubbing alcahole. And when you fan just put the bottle in a cleaner area, like in a room with no carpet and not alot of furniture like your kitchen. You would be surprised but a bathroom is cleaner (mold wise) than a bed room with carpeting (or even without). And faning right when you wake up in the afternoon and right before you go to bed. 3 times a day it optimal and will make your fruits thiker and more robust.

i think i might use the 2 liter bottle method, but it seems kinda small to me. if you have shrooms growin out the side of your cake are they gonna fit inside that bottle?

also, does anyone know if lysol or ozium will harm mycelium??

Dont' use a 2-liter, thats way to small, use a 3-liter, you can find them at food lion and all dollar genral dollar type of stores. And if u have a 3-liter they just touch it a bit pending on ur lighting (tells em where to grow) and on how big your flush is, ive know people to get flushes so big that there'd be no way they could fit in a 4-liter bottle(Sam1912)lol, but hey 3-liter should be big enough.
