The Operating System Condom
    #22238002 - 09/14/15 06:35 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I don't know what else to call this idea so we'll dub it The Operating System Condom in the mean time. :goat:

In years past when it came to internet privacy all a user had to do was use a proxy, VPN or maybe even Tor but in recent times those too have proven to be insecure. With the big push for Windows 10 it's completely clear that a user's privacy is the currency of today.

So it got me thinking...have any of you used browser add-ins like Noscript? Basically what it does is blocks all scripts on every site a user visits until they either allow a specific script or all all scripts to run from a given site once they've come to a level of trust.

What if a program were written to where it would block all HTTP/S connections from the operating system completely? The user would of course have to granularity allow those connections they'd like to make which would resume the functionality they were intending from their PC.

The program would be written and integrated with a boot loader that would fire up just before the operating system acting as a condom from the prying eyes and large corporations.

What do you guys think about this idea? Stroke of genius or am I completely retarded?

Edit: Holy shit Shroomery indexes fast! I posted this 15 minutes ago then Googled "Operating System Condom" and it's already there at the #1 result. We're internetting in real-time here folks! :goodmorning:

If your doing something that truly concerns you about privacy, then use a virtual machine with tails on it. For casual use, uMatrix is good for chrome. I2p is a good alternative to tor, and always read your VPN's privacy policy.

But about your 'Condom' idea, it would have to be in the firmware or BIOS of the system. Else you would have to work with windows boot loader and proprietary code. which is near impossible.
The question really is does BIOS or U/EFI handle port initialization? If so can my motherboards firmware be modified to keep ports from initializing and could I initialize those ports after being passed to the OS? Then, how can I keep a packet from traversing based on a hash of the header and could it be implemented into BIOS/U/EFI?

You'd have better luck making an ethernet condom or a USB wifi condom I think, plus it would be far more user friendly and you could incorporate a nice web interface.

Stop using shitty privacy invading operating systems, go open source. I've grown to love linux over the past year, year and a half. I use Fedora 22 and Ubuntu 14.04 and couldn't be happier.

I don't have a lot to offer on this tread than to agree with luckytriple6. Go open source if these are your concerns.

But that OP! Amazing. I was in stitches reading that.
