Knots, but no cigar.

It's been about 4-5 days since birthing, and afoaf did the dunk and roll tek. He used the normal PF tek substrate, and did everything pretty much the PF tek way. Right now he has, on several cakes, knots forming. One cake seems to have quite a few. There is no smell of contamination, but no fruiting has occured. Three days ago was when the knots were forming, and according to many people on this forum, pinning is supposed to happen 12-48 after knots form (it's been 72 and there's not much visible change, a few knots form here and there). Anything he should do to help induce pinning?

Just give it some more time. It can take longer and if you have knots, then pins are on the horizon. :thumbup: I have personally seen knots that didn't pin for a few days.

When I used PF tek my first few times, pinning took way longer then 4-5 days. Took about 2 weeks, and I had knots of mycelium as well after about a week. Possibly just need to wait a little longer.

That's what we figured.  We know we're being impatient, but weren't we all our first time? :smile:

One last thing...perlite is being used for humidification.  On some spots, there's some orange "blobs".  I don't know how they would have formed, but they don't really look like contams (plus it's perlite, we don't know how fungus could grow on a rock).  Should I discard the orange colored perlite?  We put a small amount of H2O2 on the orange parts last night just to make sure.

Did the orange just spontaneously show up? I'd get it out of there and mist some h2o2 into the perlite.

I think I can make out some knots, but I see a lot of healthy aerial mycelium. Nice job!

that orange is probably rust from the lids, you have metal sitting on the perlite right? nothing to worry about
