blue-green mold on PF cake
    #22235618 - 09/14/15 08:05 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm mostly taking this opportunity to say hello, since I use this site so extensively for assistance, it just started to seem like it was time to stop being a lurker. I do have a tiny contribution to make, for total noobs like me:

In a recent hunt for contam ID help, I found (it felt like) about a million posts asking for a determination of what's bruising, and what's blue mold on mycelium. I have a pretty good picture from an early failure of my own. Blue-green mold -- what I'm pretty sure is penicillium spp. here -- is really not mistakable for mycelium up close. The contamination doesn't JUST lack the spindly legs you want to see in healthy colonization; it also has a fine granular quality, which I imagine is the penicillium sporulating. I hope this convenient side by side image is helpful to other rank amateurs like me; it's almost too bad I didn't have more unwanted elements on the substrate to highlight more differences between good and bad growth.

N.B. I got up close to this contaminant outside, with a respirator, and was sure to multiply bag the refuse and do away with it as soon as possible, and I'd advise anybody else to do the same of course.
