Thinking of buying some precious metals. Post your stacks if you have em.

I knew this guy who literally had like over $20,000 in gold jewelry and knick-knacks
Shit was crazy, he kept it in a goddamn treasure chest in his basement
Then he mysteriously vanished

A friend of mine has been buying silver for awhile, has probably just shy of $5k worth. He is set on the idea that once the dollar collapses, he will be the one laughing

People like that make me fucking laugh mind you silver does have some actual worth where as my friend who is also like this was buying stacks of Digimon, Pokemon & DBZ tazo chips like the ones you would get in a packet of chips & thought in time could re-sell them for a small fortune
Shit like that just makes me laugh & think "You'll learn one day, son" Pretty sure he has stopped buying them & is trying to re-sell the ones he has now to break even. Classic.

I buy a lot of silver for my jewelry business, but I wouldn't invest money in gold or silver as a safety net. The silver and gold can be manipulated and even recalled making it illegal for anyone to sit on it. As a gemologist, it's clear where the real investing is. High end American gems have been sought after and production has never been high enough to cause a glut. Gems like aquamarine, sapphire, tourmaline, morganite, kunzite, red beryl, heliodor etc have done nothing but rise in value over the past 5 years.

really? I would have thought all the shit they started making in labs would have started to lower their value? And as the technology advances, and has already advanced to the point for diamonds at least you can't tell the difference anymore without extensive tests.
point is the gem market is about to get ran over by 3d printing/lab technology. who's going to bother paying for gems when you can just print some shit that's custom and exactly what you want it to look like
I wouldn't be surprised if the gem market hasn't already started to get fakes. well im sure they've had fakes for a long time but now it'll be worse and the quality could skyrocket
part of me worries they will eventually learn how to make gold and silver as well or at the least they will find a way to make gold from a mixture of other metals + chemicals and environmental influences.
guns were thought of being a good investment as well but 3dprinting has kinda fucked that up too, how long till you can start printing real guns that are quality
really at the end of the day there's only 3 things people can't fuck with, food, water, land. those are the real investments and that's why California is in a drought, the water industry sucked it dry and its a 2 fold brilliant idea. You get your product to sell, and you raise its value because you fucked California out of all their water.

Fakes and treated stones for color enhancement are common in the gem market, which makes the true gems more valuable, but you really have to have experience in the scams to know what to look for. One of the latest scams is to laminate a thin slab of real but specimen grade ruby onto a synthetic ruby. The buyer will see the zoning they are looking for and buy. That's another reason American gems are so valuable. You can usually go directly to the mine owners and know what you're buying is the real deal. I sell my gems and have an impeccable reputation in the gem market. I actually try to educate my buyers about the various grades they're looking at and the scams some of my competitors use. One that is used by my competitors is to change the name of a long established type of obsidian and rename it as something almost identical to another variety that's harder to dig, almost extinct in nature, and extremely valuable. In this case it was middle fork davis creek rainbow obsidian. People digging next to where I used to dig decided one year to rename it as "electroblaze" and doubled the price on it. I'm one of the only people to dig and actually get the true electric blue obsidian from another mine altogether. They named the mfdc rainbow as close as they could think to the electric blue to obviously try and make more money from it. It has caused a big misunderstanding between buyers and sellers, and dissent between me and the scammers who are trying to pull this off. My response has been to high grade my best mfdc rainbow and sell it as mfdc rainbow at a slightly higher price. My buyers are always confused about this situation and get a good education on what's going on. I'm sure it comes back around to my competitors though and they hate me for it.

so you mine some yourself or are you referring to when you go to the mines to buy? Mining gems and metals at a hobby level always seemed like something that could be fun but really hard to get started, so if you do mine yourself id be curious as to how you go about it, and how you find places to mine

I do mine my own gems and own 8 claims in Colorado and southern California. None of my claims have been proven yet other than quartz crystals and galena, but I spent this season mining on a friend's claim for aquamarine. I mined over 10k worth of good stones in two weeks and another 5-10k in very fine stones. Doing this without a good connection is almost impossible up there in Colorado right now. I'm lucky as hell and am mining the same claim that the prospectors film crew is filming Amanda and Jessica digging big stones from. It's really about hard work though and a lot of persistence. One partner gave up this season before we even got going and I'm sure he's kicking himself. You have to envision yourself hitting big rather than worrying about failure. Both will happen but this seems to have paid off for me. I located possibly the last of the electric blue obsidian a few years ago and put a crew on it last year to get most of it. I ended up with a few tons of gem grade electric blue that I sell for $20 per gram polished. That's $9k per pound of finished obsidian. I used to sell it rough for $20 a pound but I feel like I'm giving it away for that when I can polish it and only let out so much at the shows, always keeping it in demand. I sold enough rough to create a buzz, directing buyers to me since they all now know I mined it recently.

I honestly wouldn't get into buying stones without at least a few years practice buying in smaller lots and following the results. It takes a good jeweler to be able to look at a pile of stones and know the value after they're cut. You have to take into consideration color variations, imperfections, loss, size, and clarity. Most sellers don't have their stone lots perfectly graded so it can take awhile to get an accurate value. Most buyers are reluctant to just sit down and take a vendor's whole day picking through their stones, and most sellers don't welcome this, since stones are stolen this way very easily unless every single stone is accounted for, and even then they can be switched out for fakes or of lesser quality. It's the greatest return if you know what to buy and what not to buy, but that can be really hard to determine.

The diamond market has been rigged for many decades. Diamonds are not that scarce and without mafia style tactics, the price would have collapsed long ago.
You can't create gold or silver in the lab. The price of pm's has been kept artificially low. When the worldwide economic collapse hits, pm's will shoot up in value. Get 'em while they are cheap.

stacking guns and ammo is more important. Because I'm going to take your precious metals with my guns during the apocalypse. Better investment too, just look at the price of guns in ammo over the past 10 years in California.

Meanwhile the dollar gets stronger and stronger and the price of silver has tanked 70% in the last four years.
He has $5000 worth? I wonder how much he paid for it? Probably $15,000. Suckers are born every minute.
