It wouldn't be the same, sponges don't produce heat like mycelium. Warm humid air rises, drawing more air through the bottom and perlite. When I had my SGFC full of cakes and used to smoke cigs, you could see where the air was sucked in at the holes the perlite was stained with tar, lol

I too think the more cakes the better. I have tried with just a few and they didn't do very well. If I only have a few to fruit I now just use a 2liter bottles. (that is when I do cakes which isn't often these days.)

NDStepp84 said: You could make smaller SGFCs that would work, read the link in my signature to understand the principles. Another thing is humidity of the chamber isn't that important, the only place it is important is on the surface of the cakes, this is why we roll the cakes in verm and keep them misted. It produces a humid micro climate on the surface, and allows for evaporation which promotes pinning. Build a proper SGFC and ditch the hygrometer.
Ok, thanx a lot man! I am trying to become a good cultivator and with help from people like yourself it feels within reach. Just a pic of my sgfc project

You need a LOT more holes all around the tub (1/4") separated by about 2 inches.

Re-read that one.
Hmm.. thanx for the tip.. but in my defense the fc in the pic was made b4 my first post in this thread... I really like the design and understand the principles, I understand the airflow and evaporation etc... Unfortunately it got me a bit bummed out... Maybe this will make you spin, but I wonder if there is any adjustments to do to lower the mist and fan count per day? You see, I work pretty much, and are usually away from home at least 14 hours/day, does this mean that sgfc's are out of the question for me? Right now I run a very small improvised fruiting chamber with about 20 holes in it, I only have time to mist and fan 2-3 times per day, and that is just, barely, enough for that fc. With this design I am sure you get very much improved performance, but with no one to take care of the misting during day time I wonder if you could lower the amount of holes, or mabe make them smaller?; of course with some loss in performance, but still.?? Or should I just give up and go for other fc design, and if so, what fc would work best for me. I do some pf cakes and also cased popcorns. Best regards, BrainCrash

A SGFC was designed to be left for 14 hours a day. Many people mist and fan them too much anyway. When you move up start monotubs which can be left for weeks.

Ok, thanx! That sounds great and I am very relieved! The holes I have done so far are 8mm (there is a pic in an earlier post I did in this thread), according to the sgfc tutorial you should use 1/4inch holes, which is 6.35mm in metric, so it shouldn't make that much difference, but the rest of the holes I will make 6mm. I will post pics of the fc when it's done, which will be this weekend. Again, thanks for the help!
