Spray and fan sgfc
    #22234857 - 09/13/15 10:58 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Never really grew pf correctly i have a nice 58 qt sgfc with 6 cakes and 4 inchs of perlite.
Now for my question; is it necessary to mist and fan before the cake colonize the verm casing layer?
Is it necessary at all to mist and fan and what do you mist the cakes or walls?

(jus some porn)

1. Yes, you want to mist the cakes 1-2 hours after rolling and placing them in the fruiting chamber, we wait this hour or 2 so the verm sticks, and doesn't just fall off when it gets misted.

B. Yes, it is necessary, if you want optimal/descent results....and You want to mist the cakes, gently with a fine mist until they glisten, then fan out the chamber for a humidity drop, to make room in the air for evaporation of the water you just misted to take place.

X. Is that ur FC in the pic?

I would invest in a new spraybottle instead of reusing one that had chemicals in it.... but that's just me.

Am I the only one that thinks the effectiveness of the sgfc goes up when you have more cakes (eg more substrate) to supply more humidity?

When I grew three cakes in a 105 qt sgfc it seemed to hold humidity poorly but when I packed the damn thing with cakes wall to wall i got incredible results.

Yes, the more cakes the stronger the natural air currents in the SGFC,the cakes put off heat that rises drawing more humid fresh air through the perlite. I agree more does better than less.

I am actually making my very first sgfc's of my own right now, and I have some questions..
I am using rather small chambers, 15 liter/4 gallon each and made 20 8mm holes in them. I put a wet rag in one of them and put a hygrometer in it to test it.
The RH landed at, just above 80% and I wonder if you guys think that is humid enough...
Of course it ought to climb even higher with perlite and 4 pf cakes each in them.
Any thoughts?

You could make smaller SGFCs that would work, read the link in my signature to understand the principles. Another thing is humidity of the chamber isn't that important, the only place it is important is on the surface of the cakes, this is why we roll the cakes in verm and keep them misted. It produces a humid micro climate on the surface, and allows for evaporation which promotes pinning. Build a proper SGFC and ditch the hygrometer.

would it help to fruit low numbers of cakes with some sponges in the FC
