REAL rootbeer is almost always alcoholic. In the 1-3% range typically. Making real rootbeer is illegal today in america, because our loving government doesn't want us using real sassafras(because it contains a precursor used in the manufacturing of MDMA).

No, it's not illegal to homebrew your own root beer. The ban on sassafras (or rather, sassafras oil) was because safrole was found to be a very weak carcinogen. However, the risk to human health has been found so tiny that it is of no practical concern. I can imagine how the ban has stayed in place due to the MDA/MDMA production route using safrole, but as I understand, it wasn't the reason for the ban (also given that the ban was imposed in 1960. At that time, virtually nobody had even heard of MDMA.

I used to make amazing fresh alcoholic and organic ginger ale. It was one of the best beers I used to make. I was a master at amber ales and stouts. My blackberry stout was pretty popular. I always brewed with the berries thrown into the wort at the end and strained/pressed out for full flavor. I never added concentrated flavor or juices at bottling and it always tasted like the berries were fresh but also blended really well with the other flavors, with the exception of blueberry. I can't believe I never tried a root beer and I can't believe real ginger ale isn't more popular.

From True Brews by Emma Christensen:
Quote:
Root beer is tricky. True root beer is made with sassafras root, which is not only hard to find outside its growing region but also cannot be sold commercially. Sassafras contains a chemical, safrole, which was found to cause cancer in lab rats if consumed in large enough quantities and was subsequently banned by the FDA. Youβd have to drink root beer like water to be at risk, but still. Bummer. I tried many different combinations of herbs, barks, roots, and spices to mimic an all-natural root beer at home, but at the end of the day, you really need that sassafras root. Therefore, this is one recipe where I endorse the use of syrup to get the flavor just right. I particularly like Fermentap #1 Root Beer Syrup, but any you find will make a fine soda. Since different syrups can vary in sweetness, use less sugar to start and add more to taste. 2 cups water, plus more to fill the bottles Β½ to 1 cup packed / 4 to 8 ounces dark brown sugar 2Β½ teaspoons root beer extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ΒΌ cup / 1β
ounces raisins, coarsely chopped 1 star anise Pinch of salt β
teaspoon dry champagne yeast 1 β’ Bring the water to a simmer and remove from the heat. Add Β½ cup of the brown sugar, the root beer extract, vanilla, raisins, star anise, and salt, stirring to dissolve the brown sugar. Let stand until cool. 2 β’ Strain the root beer syrup into a bowl and pour into a clean 2-liter bottle using a funnel. Top off the bottle with water, leaving at least 1 inch of headspace. Give it a taste and add more brown sugar, if desired. The extra sugar will dissolve on its own. 3 β’ Add the yeast. Screw on the cap and shake the bottle to dissolve and distribute the yeast. Let the bottle sit at room temperature out of direct sunlight until carbonated, typically 12 to 48 hours, depending on the temperature of the room. Check the bottle periodically; when it feels rock solid with very little give, itβs ready. 4 β’ Refrigerate overnight or for up to 2 weeks. Open very slowly over a sink to release the pressure gradually and avoid bubble-ups

Not your fathers root beer sucks IMO, it does taste like root beer but for me has a shitty aftertaste, Coney Island hard root beer is much better and has been around longer but for some reason this new one is catching a lot of attention and they're making it out to be the first root beer beer lol

No. Because safrole is a potent liver toxin and most likely carcinogenic.

how does a long island iced tea which is made of
vodka gin white rum white tequila triple sec and some lemon juice
taste exactly like iced tea?
but i think that pic is real, they just poured it hard to make the head purposefully and quickly took a picture....that stuff has some carbonation to it, but its super filling IMO and not high enough ABV for me
they supposedly make bombers of it that are 20% but they say good luck finding them so i dont think they are anywhere outside of their home state really - id really like to try that

I got some of the 'Not your Fathers Rootbeer' the other day and wasnt a big fan. Too sweet to drink more than 1 or 2 imo. When it first hits my toungue it tastes exactly like regular rootbeer, but the aftertaste is like some kind of liquor mixed with rootbeer to me. Really taste the alcohol at the end.

$10 for a 6 pack is expensive to you?!!??
The fuck you drink? PBR?
I mostly buy bombers anymore and those are like $20 for two glasses of beer and I wouldn't even consider tha expensive. Good beer costs money.
(Not trying to be an ass, so in sorry if that's how you take this; but I've just alway though it was absolutly rediculous when people day $10 is expensive for a 6 pack.)

Alright, just bought a six pack of Not Your Father's RootBeer. For $12! Fuck!
Took a couple sips semi-warm, like 60F or so. its better to taste that warm anyway, it just wasnt in the fridge long enough.
First of all, the taste isnt like rootbeer. at least not like Mugs or Barq's. Maybe an old skool old western type, but never had that type.
The beer is more like its tagline "Ale with the taste of spices".
the taste reminds me of a beer-version of Barcardi Spiced Rum. Very similar to that Spirit.
I can safetly say im not getting this brand again. Once was enough. Its an select taste. Even with my rootbeer beer float with vanilla bean ice cream, its still not that great.
But im glad i tried it to know for myself

I love root beer, so adding alcohol can only be a good thing.

From everything I've heard and seen this is marketing by the big boys at it's best. It's just another small brewery that put something amazing out and the Miller house bought it and marketed it to make a profit. What I was told is that they had a 10%, 20%, and 30% version available and they put the company that made four loco in charge of developing something lower abv and more desirable. Oh and Pabst blue ribbon is brewing It I believe. I may have that mixed around a lil bit. Either way it's swill and artificial as yellow #5 farts.
