Outdoor Growing
    #2223317 - 01/06/04 03:52 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Just had a few questions about outdoor growing. I live in in the great lakes area, around michigan, just wondering what sort of mushrooms would grow well outdoors in this area. Also in winter its pretty cold, would the winter freeze kill my outdoor garden? Thanks for your help guys!

If you follow the faqs and teks(search function will provide more than enough), an outdoor bed of cyans and/or azures is quite doable. Both are known to tolerate cold better than other species. I doubt the winter will kill your beds, the mycelium will go dormant. There are natives in your area, and they survive the winter, so i wouldnt worry about it. A well done and well kept bed can last approx 4-5 years or possibly longer. BTW, michigan has a pretty decent number of active natives.

I havent heard of cyans/azures being native to michigan, but there's nothing wrong with getting an outdoor bed together and introducing them to the area. They may not be native, but they'll grow there. Here's a list of native actives that already grow there:

Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe liniformans var. americana
Psilocybe silvatica .
Panaeolus subbalteatus
Conocybe smithii Watling.
Gymnopilus aeruginosus
Gymnopilus luteofolius
Gymnopilus luteus
Gymnopilus validipes

Im not sure how common place any of these are in your area, but with a good field guide/research, you wont have any problems, unless of course you misidentify.

they are woodloving species, and potent (especially the azure). ragadink pointed to a good suitable link. Using search will provide many more. Hope this helps, and good luck.
