Liberty Caps ID request
    #22229808 - 09/13/15 02:15 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing in long grass at the side of the road. Cold climate (ave. 11-13C).

Gills:
Light brown color, attached.

Stem:
2 inches long, couple millimetres thick, hollow, thin, no visible bruising.

Cap:
Dark brown with darker brown tip (slight nipple), smooth (not really slimy, but it had been raining..), 1cm or so diameter, conical.

Spore print color:
Tbc

I was fairly sure they were liberty caps until I noticed the non-slimy caps. It was rainy weather, so maybe that would have an impact on colour and texture - not sure. Pictures below...

Thanks for any help

Panaeolus papilionaceus. Generally this species is bigger than P. semilanceata and one of the biggest giveaways (to the untrained eye) is that these have consistently straight fragile stems that easily break where P. semilanceata have wiry stems that you can wrap around your finger.

Probably P. acuminatus. P. papilionaceus typically has the cap margin with tooth-like veil remnants.
Anyway both species are common enough in the same habitat as liberty caps.

Yeah i did notice the lack of teeth but thought it might be because they are so wet or something. Or just an atypical example of the species. Good to know though.
