to all the surfers out there..
    #22229471 - 09/12/15 11:21 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

does it ever cross ur mind that there may be sharks lurking?, or like they just dont think about that kind of stuff?..

like i'd love to start surfing but i would feel too uncomfortable sitting on my surf board with my legs hanging down like all day, completely vulnerable to anything lurking beneath..

how u do it?..

Do you ever go swimming at the beach? Not much different just because the water is a little deeper. Sharks prowl shallow water as well.

Besides it seems like it's far more common for a shark to just take a bite of your board than you.

No I don't surf.

One of the reasons I haven't surfed yet, but I'd really like to shake this fear and just do it....

There's something that freaks me out about being in an environment in which your a million times slower than an animal that can swim right up to you without you noticing and remove an entire limb in less than 3 seconds with one single bite.

No land animals I know of can do that to a human.

you're more likely to die by smashing your head on coral and drowning.
Ever listen to Jack Johnson? He was a pretty decent pro surfer for a while, got a crazy head injury...might explain why his musics so slow and melow...

I live 1000 miles from the nearest ocean. I don't care if the break is Mavericks I don't give a fuck about a great white. Just trying to keep your head above water is enough to keep you occupied.

Grizzly/Polar bears could probably rip your arm off just as fast as a shark, do salt water crocodiles count as land animals? Or Hippos? Hippos fuck people up all the time.

People are more likely to die falling out of bed, than getting killed by a shark.

Short of just being oblivious to their presence, they won't sneak up on you though. I think that's part of it for him. The fact that he'll never see it coming before it happens. Which is why I pick the jaguar as the land equivalent. It's powerful enough to do it and is a stalker that can sneak up on prey easily.

The crocodile may be able to sneak up on you, but I'd say that's a water animal and not a land animal. Outside of the water they lose their stalking edge.

I surf every some for a couple of weeks. I haven't seen too many sharks. Most regular surfing on the beach isn't gonna go out that far.

But I think a big part is ignoring that fear. Shark attacks are pretty rare.

I don't even think polar bears can remove a limb as fast as a great white shark.  And gators have to get you in a deathroll to rip your limbs off.  They might grab you and shake you and rip chunks of flesh away, and claw at you, but the fastest way bears and lions kill people when they do is by them grabbing the humans neck and shaking.  Even national parks advise that if you're ever attacked by a bear, fight for your life while protecting your neck the best you can.  Those are our most unsecure vital organs and it's what those animals seem geared to go for when they really attack.

I don't want to be attacked by any of them, lol.....but that fear of sharks is rooted somewhere deep in my mind.  Probably because you have to ignore the fact that they might be right next to you and you don't know it.  I think that is a huge part of peoples fear of the ocean.

cougars are the same way when you are in the woods, you don't know they are there until they are on top of you usually (When they attack).
And a grizzly bear could definitely rip your arm off like nothing man, look that shit up lol - they can smash through ice that is several feet thick and mangle seals.
The big difference is, a shark bites your arm off, a polar bear tears it off.
Arms still coming off lol.
you want a logical fear though? Car accidents.

I've spent plenty of time in the ocean, but never surfed.  I'd love to learn how.  It seems to me crashing into coral or rocks would be a bigger concern.
There was one time when I was little, that I got this really immense fear of jellyfish after learning about them in school.  I wouldn't go in the water after that.  I watched everyone have fun in the water and that made me feel regretful that I didn't go play in the water.  So next time I went to the beach I was in the water the whole time and had a blast.  What a microcosm of life.
Now I never really pay mind to sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, etc. outside of common sense.  If I want to be in the water, and I can't see any danger then what's the use in worrying?  I'd rather be enjoying my time at the beach, not wishing and worrying the whole time.

Here in SA you constantly think about the sharkies while paddling.
Unfortunately shark attacks here do happen.
I lived right next to the ocean my entire life, and in the 28 years only one guy in this parts lost his life.
We have loads of sharks. You see them, you fear them, but you know its their territory and you respect them.

The fear of them should not be enough to keep you out of the water.

We have a few each year over the whole country. But as I said, the area I'm in only one attack back in 2009.
For the amount of sharks I see here, that is amazing.

I don't surf. I've tried and suck at it. I love going to the beach though. Yeah it kinda gets to me a bit sometimes but I try not to think about it. It's the mental equivalent of being constantly afraid when you are in a car on the freeway because you might crash and die. Actually that's a lot more likely. It is a creepy feeling though sometimes being in the water and thinking about shit like that.

I've only tried surfing one time and I was doing alright. I live a few miles away from the shark bite capital of the world. but I don't let that bother me because it's still pretty rare to get bit and I hardly go swimming anyways. I'm actually more scared of jellyfish than sharks.

Next week I'm going to this place near me that has a lazy river tube ride. Sometimes when you're floating down the river an alligator will swim like 5 feet in front of your tube. That is much more scary than a shark. We've actually gone down the river at night, when you aren't supposed to, and all you can hear on both banks of the river are all the alligators croaking. It is soooo intense that it is unbelievable because you don't know what will happen when you try to climb out of the river.

I go surfing pretty often, it's kinda like anything else that can kill you while your about your day. You just don't think about it.

When I am cycling I don't think about ripping downhill at 40+mph on my bike, it has to be done.  When I am running on the side of the road I don't think about the car which could swerve into me, it's just part of it.

As other have said, it's mind over matter.

Plenty of surf spots without sharks

No sharks where I live. Yeah sharks make me paranoid

Cougars have been clocked at speeds of 40-50 mph.

Which is why I pick the jaguar as the land equivalent. It's powerful enough to do it and is a stalker that can sneak up on prey easily.

The crocodile may be able to sneak up on you, but I'd say that's a water animal and not a land animal. Outside of the water they lose their stalking edge.

wait are you saying that sharks don't sneak up or they do? If he's in an area with white sharks they most certainly are ambush predators - but they're looking for seals, and they make few mistakes(unfortunately to be mistaken for a seal usually means a nasty injury if you're lucky).  If you actually see a white shark I'd think you're safe because that's not how they hunt. They are curious and they don't always know wtf you are, so it doesn't shock me that encounters with them are more likely to end with them nibbling on your surf board because they don't have hands.

I can appreciate op's fear though. I dive and have been around sharks a fair bit more than the average person who isn't surfing/diving/in the water on the daily. I'm actually scheduled to dive a pretty awesome wreck tomorrow here in FL where there's been great white sightings lately and hearing that gets my blood pumping a bit because I've never encountered them before - but I'd much rather swim with one 112 feet under the surface near the sea bed where they're not hunting for prey than surf, the vantage point is much better.

I think you should do it zZZz, there's still basic safety precautions you can take like not going in the water if there's been recent sightings, not going at dawn or dusk or alone, so on and so forth. And attacks are so rare to begin with.

I was saying that bears don't just sneak up on people, short of the person being oblivious to their presence. I've never heard of them actively trying to ambush humans.

I've had two decent sized sharks that could of taken my foot off circle around me before. Where your surfing depends on how sketchy it is, if your in south Africa or Australia its real sketchy but in FL its not that sketchy. Just gotta surf in large groups of people.

Six Feet Under. Was on HBO for five or six seasons. By Alan Ball who did American Beauty and TrueBlood. About a family who runs a funeral home. Each episode starts with someone dying.
