How long will cacti seeds remain viable and how should they be stored?
Thanks

As long as they stay dry, probably years.

Depends on the species. Dead serious about this one. Some cacti Yes can lay dormant in seed for years, while others only remain viable for a short amount of time. I always suggest to people to buy the freshest seed possible. I have spent good money on what I have figured was either Old seed, or Bad seed.. and either way it is disappointing.

Some plants like Lotus can encapsulate and perhaps stay viable for 1000's of years. (have heard rumors of lotus seed from Egyptian tombs sprouting). Where as other plants like say Banisteriopsis (Yage - Amazon traveling vine), Only remain viable in seed for a very short time, after the plant drops the seed. (some people say, as short as a couple weeks to a month). Other plants like Citrus, are also very tempermental with seed viability. Its been my experience, that If I want to try citrus from seed, I almost have to take the seeds directly from the fruit and put them in starting mix.

Most varieties like Trichos, and Lophos, should remain viable for a few years at least, but if you were concerned about a specific species, I would do some extensive research to find out.
