Farmers market experience * 1
    #22227289 - 09/12/15 02:15 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So i just returned from my first farmers market, the El Paso Art and Farmers Market Fairly good experience, one of the few produce vendors due to the arid climate and poor soil. I only had about 3 lbs of sellable oysters so i sold them $5 per 1/4 lb bag. I made $33 and traded a loaf of bread and a drink, i also gave free samples to all the food trucks and a few chefs.

Some things i learned,

- Get there early for primo location in the shade

- Pre package all your produce, especially with the heat here fruits dry up quick. If your not bagging mist the mushrooms often.

- Have a nice display mushroom cluster at minimum for people to handle and inspect. I also had a colonized petri dish,  mason jars with milo, my bulk substrate and a jar of colonized bulk substrate. This was all super helpful since about seven classes of elementary school kids came by for a lesson in mycology.

- When it gets close to closing time see what you can trade the local vendors if you have surplus.

- Make cooked samples, its almost impossible to describe new flavors.

- Have cooking direction cards to hand out with your product

- have a business card holder out front for people to take the card themselves.

- Make sure your contact info is on your bags for future orders. I attached a business card to each bags zip tie ahead of time.

If anyone else has any pointers for farmers market please feel free to chime in.

What's wrong with a plastic bag if it's got a few holes poked?

I didn't see poked holes but paper wicks the moisture away while plastic encourages bacteria and mold to proliferate.

We've sold hundreds of pounds in paper bags and never had a problem.  But we make a point to pick our mushrooms when they are dry and don't store them in paper bags.

Welcome to the market grOwer. Trading for other goods at the end of market is the only way I shop at market anymore - its great, lots of times you get more value with trade then cash.

My market advice:

- Don't overprice your mushrooms.

- Pimp out your table/space. At the very least get a nice tapestry to cover your table to the ground.

- When sampling cooked foods, health code comes into play(hand wash station, etc.).

- Sell from your display baskets often and keep replenishing it. This keeps things from drying out and dying in the sun. All your extra stash should be out of direct sunlight and carefully stored in coolers if possible.

- Often times the more mushrooms you have, the more you can sell(up to a certain point). Impressions of abundance are more appealing to customers.

We only use paper bags and its never been an issue. Its cheap and they come in different sizes.  :hairmetal: Stamp em in your market-downtime with your name/logo and fill to order. Its helpful to have some already bagged up and clearly priced because some people just wanna grab & go.

If your bags are getting soggy, you've harvested them way to wet and need to lay off the humidity. Aim to harvest as close to market as possible.

Most farmers that display produce in berry baskets keep the baskets and just dump out whats in it at the time of sale.

Its commendable that you put yourself out there to test the waters at the farmers market.
I have been wanting to get a stand at the local market here in Missouri but they want a fee
of $200 to have a stand! Not sure if that would make it worthwhile or not, may need to look
around for another, smaller market.

Anyways, best of luck

Thanks for the input! I do have paper bags with my business card taped to the front but i felt the plastic bags would be better for product visibility especially on my first visit. I really need to invest in some stackable totes with some breathing holes and a large cooler to harvest and store the product in. Hopefully with future profits i can dial in my setup packaging. I plan to make a hipsterish 2'x3' pallet sign with my company name and mushroom art then paint the bottom slots chalkboard for prices and info. Im also going to hit up thrift stores for more wicker baskets, a nice variety of display baskets with different strains would look nice i think. I did jack up the prices a bit but i explained that this was my first sale and i didn't want to sell out, getting my name and product out was more important to me than moving all my product. Regardless i made almost every sale when someone showed interest. Next market ill be selling around $12-14 a lb. And hopefully my pinks do well so i don't just have the one variety.

you could sell for $16-20/lb.  I know people at small markets selling for even higher prices!  Think about it this way, if you double your prices and only lose 20% of your business, you're making more money.  Try to make it so people can't spend less than $5.  Just some marketing/pricing points.

Thanks for the input drake. I guess it all goes back to supply and demand. I'm the only person growing here and supply is low while there clearly is a demand. Keeping the prices around the $20 would be awesome!

I don't have farmers market experience, but when I am able to find them in the grocery stores here, oysters sell for $18.50/lb,  and they look like shit.  I'm sure that people would be willing to pay $20 a pound for good quality fresh mushrooms.

It's summer, blue shaded oysters are generally low temps.

you ever worked at a farmer's market?  it sucks.  $20 a pound is great when you're selling them.  if you don't like it, then grow them yourself.  or buy some rotten ones at the store and get sick :P
