So i picked a few off my cakes. 1. I waited to long and the cap fully opened. How damaging is this? I picked a third cap not open but a tad smaller in size. But veil still in tact. How do i dry and store them until my dehydrator arrives.

Cap fully opening isn't terrible you lose a little potency but its negligible imo. It's the spores making a mess everywhere that kinda sucks. Put them on a rack or some paper towel and blow a fan on them. That's the easiest. You could also make a simple desiccant chamber.
-------------------- Alright then, picture this if you will: 10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" post, just outside of Area 51. Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thing with just a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping... Holy fucking shit!

All you can do is dry with a fan, or a fan and an oven in combination, then store with desiccant when dry.

There's no potency loss. Unless you get down to talking about alkaloid content, but that's impossible to notice. Spore mess is the worst. Spores being dropped on substrate is what you want to avoid, it's detrimental to subsequent flushes.

There's no potency LOST, there's just no more added while water weight continues to swell.

It's all just speculation though. Although there are mushrooms with similar alkaloids where once they make spores, they stop putting it into the alkaloids, and actually lose actives. They aren't cubes though. So until we can actually research cubes.. we're just going off personal experience.

bodhisatta said: there's some evidence not directly related to cubensis but other species with indole alkaloids that are used by the mycelium for spore pigmentation. when the cubensis matures and forms spores not only are the cells engorging with water but some of those alkaloids are being broken down endogenously to carry out end of life reproductive tasks. this is common in some other species and it's not too far off to expect something similar happening in cubensis.
which would mean that as spores form your % potency goes down, this would be super minimal compared to your genetics playing a role, and your drying and storage.
if you have a pin just about to mature weighs 100g you may assume it dries to about 10g when cracker dry if you took that same pin and let it mature till it weighed 115g you might assume it would dry to about 11.5g but it will actually dry up to about 10g. if you were to eat them fresh the fully mature shrooms may appear less potent, if you dry them to cracker dry it should all even out anyway.
it's anecdotal evidence but with the wealth of studies of similar but non active mushrooms the theory is strongly supported, I would love to see some evidence to the contrary though.
just because you don't know evidence exists doesn't mean you can go around saying there's no evidence. that's called politics
Honestly I haven't noticed much of a difference in potency if the caps open up.. but I also only eat cracker dry fruits.
