Conflicting WBS Tek - Help!!
    #22224643 - 09/11/15 10:18 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm ready to prep my WBS for inoculation, but I'm reading conflicting advice and could use some clarity. I have purchased 2 bags of Wild Finch Mix bird seed.

1. For rinsing, I have read that I should do so with water (distilled?) anywhere from 2 to 4 times before soaking. Given the seeds are smaller, should I rinse less to prevent the seed from getting gummy?

2. I have also read conflicting opinions on the amount of time the seed should soak for from 8 hours to 24 hours. With gypsum or without? Some people say gypsum isn't necessary With finch seed because it doesn't have corn in it. How much water do I add?

3. Once it has soaked do I drain it then head to simmering in a new pot of water or let it simmer in the water it soaked in?

4. After simmering do I simply drain then load into the jars or let it sit out and partially dry. I'm reading the grains shouldn't be soaking wet, but the dry times range from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

I hope this doesn't look like I'm being lazy... I've spent hours researching this crap and just can't seem to get a straight answer that isn't followed by another article or forum post as to why the last Tek was crap.

1. Rinse with tap until the water runs clear and clean. Extra rinsing never hurt nothing.

2. 24 hrs. And OH YEAH on the gypsum. Throw in a handful. And cover the seed until its submerged about 2 or so inches.

3. Let it reach up to that boiling point in the same gypsum grain water that it soaked in.

4. Let it steam dry as much as possible, stirring a few times to expose more and release more steam. Look up the toilet paper trick.

I would prefer not to cook the WBS if I don't have too. Do you think I'll have a problem not cooking the smaller finch seed? Like will I get enough moisture from the soak and PC alone?

As long as you soak long enough, no you don't have to boil or simmer the WBS. Soak should be all you need.

Here is how I prepare my WBS. No boil/simmer.

When I get home I'm going to give this a shot. I've decided to try transferring spores to agar at the same time as I knock up a tub of jars with a syringe. I like to keep busy and I like to experiment. If this first attempt fails, I'll try again once I have a contaminate free plate.

I think you should just find a tek and follow it. If you're mixing steps from different teks you're going to get conflicts and you could potentially wind up with a tek that doesn't work very well. For example drying time is greatly decreased when there's a simmering step right before drying because of the remaining heat. If the tek has no such simmering step then it may very well need a longer drying time.

Yea, getting that perfect moisture content is pretty important. The reason you simmer in Franks tek is because the surface moisture gets released as steam. I personally find it easiest. To each his own. But find a tek and stick to it to a T.

Alright guys, 18 hour soak after 4 rinses. Total of 7 dry quarts which should yield enough for 12 jars. I threw in 6 tablespoons gypsum and filled bucket 3 inches over seed. After soak, the seed smells somewhat fermented. Did I fuck up? The bucket was covered overnight.

I have the seed in my sink in strainers drying. I don't want to move on if I screwed up.

All is fine. You didn't fuck up at all. Pretty much always gonna smell like that after a soak. Everything gets sterilized and all forms of endospores etc. DIES.

I figured as much. I can't wait to kill the fuckers.

For my lids I think I'm going to use silicone and Tvek. I'm working on them now as my seed dries. Overkill? Should I just use polyfil?

I use synthetic disk filters. I would recommend investing in those. BUT, polyfil works great. (i have no experience with tyvek)

remember: 1/4in hole for ge

Thanks! I'll do that. For my first set I'll just use Tvek and silicone. I just drilled my 1/4 inch holes. I feel like a butch lesbian, baby, with my power drill and high temp silicone in hand. Lol.

Pollo- WBS Tek shout out? Lol. I appreciate the sentiment but I'm not sure how your shout out adds to the conversation?

Hahaha. The mason jar lids had sharp edges after drilling so I took my dremel and smoothed out the holes. I love my dremel.
