Help me take control of my marijuana habit

Hey Ya'll - I'm reaching out cause I'm really having a problem and it's inhibiting any further growth in my life spiritually or physically. I'm a long time smoker ~12 years and I'm 30 now, been an everyday smoker for years, at a point I was up to an ounce a week for a while. I got control of it last year and didn't smoke for like 8 months, but I just moved for a new job to a new state and I've started up again hard. Worse yet, I now live in CO and have access to all the hash I can smoke.
I have a long list of things I want to accomplish, but it all is words at this point, because my actions currently are to keep buying green. I know I am using it to block out something, but don't really know what the underlying issue is and part of me is afraid to find out. I do sincerly want to get control of this, I don't think marijuana will ever be out of my life. I just wish I could just smoke a bowl, set it down and walk away. The thing I say about how I smoke, is that I smoke until I wake up the next morning. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Only buy one session at a time. I know it's inconvenient but that's the point.
Next time you walk in to the store only buy like three grams. Smoke it that night. Slowly work down to like one gram sessions. It takes some self control but if you don't have access to ounces at a time, you probably will smoke less. It's worth a shot.

get rid of all weed in house. have a reputable vendor sell you safe kratom online. I recommend red vein thai or red vein bali. Dose as needed whenever you have urge to smoke. Do this for 1-2 weeks and you should feel a lot better without weed. Went through the same exact experience bro

So your solution is to replace a drug with a drug?
You have to quit 100% and cold turkey man or else you'll just have a new drug habit stealing your time and money.
You're clearly able to be honest with yourself and that plays a big part. You just have to be willing to stop. You have to be stronger than the voice in your head that tries to convince you it's okay to smoke just a little bit.
I get the same way bro, I would smoke an 1/8-1/4 a day easily. Shit stole so much time and money from me, definitely not worth it. Don't get me wrong, I miss the high and love almost everything about it, but I can't use it responsibly so I don't use it at all.

I am not saying to replace weed with kratom permanently. For example, those who quit nicotine may have edgy withdrawal symptoms and both physical and psychological issues. Using kratom those first few roughest days will make the withdrawals seem a lot easier. For weed, its mostly to ease the psychological withdrawal since it still gives you a form of dopamine release, anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. But you are right, the point is to only use it that very first week or 2 when the cannabis psychological withdrawals are the worse. You wont get hooked on kratom that easily. And as long as you have the mindset to only use it temporarily, you will have no issues. MAde quitting weed a breeze for me and I smoked at least 2-3 times a day for 6 years. Then when I was more emotionally stable after quitting cold turkey, I jumped off the kratom with no issues whatsoever. Just a suggestion man and that is exactly what helped me out. Cheers

Unless you sell and it's just part of the job, why the fuck are you smoking so much? If you live in CO, Why are you buying weed at all?

Thank you all for your replies, very helpful. I've tried quitting before and used cigarettes for the oral fixation, and I just ended up smoking for a few months. So I totally understand the drug for a drug issue when not going cold turkey. I've never tried Kratom, so I'm not sure how I would respond to it but I'm open to trying.
I was also thinking about micro-dosing shrooms as well? I have a bunch capsuled up at ~.35 mg already and have experiene at this dosage - I usually have a more up-beat disposition on the days i dose. I saw that studies are using psilocybin for smoking cessation, so maybe? I know they also provide therapy sessions, so it's not the same. to Matt87- I don't know why I smoke this much, I would like to know. I think it stems mostly from a general unease with just being here, like on earth. I have social anxieties and such. It's also not a burden on me financially, but I know i could have bought a nice car with the money i smoked up. And I don't grow because I don't have the space or permission in my apartment right now.
Either way, this is Day 1 - I'm thinking I might keep this thread updated on the progress if there is interest.

The main things quitting helped for me is more money in my pocket, I can breathe better, I don't get anxious waiting for the next time I can chief, I don't get irritated if I run out, I don't end up getting introspective in social situations like sometimes happens when getting high.
But I definitely miss the feeling in my face, the increase in sense perception, laughing at nothing, and the taste/smell of good ganja.

I don't agree with quiting cold turkey. I was up to about half a gram of BHO a day on some days, or an eighth of flower a day and it was when I couldn't keep up with my intake (work would interfere) that I'd start losing sleep, missing meals, and just being straight manic. I don't know if it was masking these issues and that is why I picked weed up, or if the issues manifested because of my addictive personality and abuse of this drug.
It doesn't matter, because when I made the conscious choice to reduce, I was able to do so. I started by focusing on my goals (I'm thinking I might go to culinary school) and trying to find non-drug related ways to cope with my stress, hunger, and insomnia. Sometimes it would get so bad, I had to smoke, but it's OK, because I still reduced my intake considerably one day after the other. That's all that mattered. I now smoke maybe a bowl a week and my appetite issues are gone completely. My stress can get out of control, but I don't need to smoke to bring it down. I use mindfulness (therapeutic, not religious) more than anything, but you'll find what works for you. My insomnia still sucks, but I'm not really working too hard on that (big dummy).
If you want to talk about some of the daily struggles, or if you DO in fact think there's something underlying that may surface from quitting (not usually the case), feel free to post more, or PM me. Surround yourself with people who support your decisions and aren't influencing you in the wrong direction. Good luck, brother!

Find something to replace. A hobby, activity, exercise, healthy diets and herbs. I got really into reishi tea, exercise and kratom helped majorly the first few days with mood, appetite, sleep, and motovstion

Man I hope you crush it, any addiction can seem like an Everest to get over I suppose if its the only kind you know.
I have been smoking for the last 8 years now & I get the same feeling you get, dont know why you cant put it down is it maybe something deeper who knows? The only times I have ever had breaks were a few days of it being dry & hard to find or when one time I stopped for maybe just under 2 months for a well needed break. So I know it can fucking suck hard.
Right now I am trying to curb Mary back again, I want to be able to go a few days without smoking weed but its fucking hard. I know I cave in easy but its all apart of the road to cutting down I suppose like Giftofdeprivation mentioned when he would slip & smoke some but its okay because your general intake it severely cut back, baby steps like with anything man! I've gotten down to 2-3 bongs a day now & I am really proud of that soon I hope to work in a day breaker, don't beat yourself up we have the power! Good-luck man! Look forward to reading on your progress, I'll update on how I am going tapering my weed down as-well so we're not alone!

I've noticed the big issue with quitting cannabis is that I needed a reason to quit. I had to be ready. If it was just for a job drug test or I went on vacation etc, I did horribly. Just can't stop thinking about getting back into it. Once I had a big change in my life that put things in different perspectives, quitting weed was a joke and I never had any cravings. My reason was that I got an OVI for being high and still in the middle of court sessions to see what the final say will be. But i pissed clean for my lawyer and haven't looked back. I'll smoke one or twice on the weekends, but the daily toking was negatively effecting my life in quite a few ways so I'm somewhat grateful I got in trouble but not too much trouble. Again, kratom was a godsend considering the weed cravings. You'll get there bro

For sure a reason to quit is all you really need if you want to beat it for good, but a part of me doesn't want to stop & I know it so I am just tapering it down hard & see where I stand from then.
Since the start of the week I have been only having 1-3 bongs a day, yesterday I only had 1 before dinner & I was worried about going to bed that night & not sleeping but it was a breeze But I know I can cope with 1 bong a day, its introducing the day breaker in I know will be a struggle for me.

I really appreciate everyone's insights into this process - it's always good to know I'm not alone. I was thinking about buying today but then thought about having to tell everyone here that I failed on day 2 would feel. So I didn't
Day 1 wasn't great, it definitely is a must to have ALL the weed out of the house first. I was scrounging and found some shake left in my weed box and even scraped out a grinder. It was enough for a bowl and only got me a little buzzed, and it tasted bad and old. A set-back, but there are bumps in the road I'm on.
Other than that.. I've had a slight tension headache all day, i can tell my appetite is going away, i was getting aggressive on the commute home, last night had slight night sweats but I'm sure tonight and tomorrow will be worse. It goes away after a few days of not smoking.
The biggest thing is wtf do I do with my time now?? When I was at work today, I thought about going home and it gave me a slight panic attack. But tonight I just kept my nose in a book and it seemed to help. I'm also mentally beating myself up too now, thinking about all the productive stuff I could/shoulda been doing the last couple months. I have to work on that.
I looked into Kratom, I'm not sure it's for me - esp cause you can't smoke it (or you need to smoke ALOT of it). But there is a shop called Rocky Mountain Kratom nearby so I might go there and check it out.
Lastly, again - thank you everyone for posting. It really means alot to me that you're all very supportive.

No one but yourself can help you take control of your habits. I was in a similar situation a few years ago, going through an ounce a week, wasting all my money, and killing my tolerence. You have already made the realization you need to stop, or at least slow down. But it is your foot on the gas.
My advice would be to limit yourself on how much you smoke, that's how I did it. I only smoke a couple grams a week now, maybe an eighth depending on the weekend. Stay off the hash and just smoke the flowers, 2 or 3 bowls a day.
Keep on track man, its not too hard. Just stay focused and motivated to do the other things you want to do with your life.

Do the kratom man. Kwikkratom.Com. try red vein thai 2-3 doses a day for the first week off weed. It will keep your dopamine levels up. Also if you don't like cold turkey smoking, perhaps switch to once or twice a week smoking. Only at night like a Friday night after work. Make a huge ritual about it, order a bunch of food and just splurge. But then take your kratom next morning to keep urges to fall back into daily use at bay. Trust me. I've tried to quit a bunch. This works the best way, but do not switch to krstom everyday completely. Worse addiction. But it's good for a week or two for your anxiety and depression and energy, appetite and sleep.
After I quit smoking, I now use kratom socially instead of alcohol mainly maybe once of twice a week. I trip on shrooms, sometimes acid, high dose once or twice a month and you bet your ass I have weed for those nights lol. Also some kratom and valium for tripping but low dose to keep my trips positive

Just thought I would post in on how I am doing. Starting from the start of the week I was... Monday-3bongs Tuesday-1bong Wednesday-2bongs Thursday-1bong & today being Friday I haven't had any yet & its 6:30PM. Hoping to go the whole day without any, don't know how I will go when I try to sleep tonight. Worst shit so far is having a dead-ass appetite & a feeling of general "un-easyness". Staying strong though.

well I started smoking cigs when I was 10, and then was turned onto cannabis when I was 15. Know who by? Ever see the old 60s english series The Avengers? Well the stunt man for 'Steed' is the guy that turned me onto hashish lol. It became my RELIGION. I toked for decades. the habit combined with sex addiction and was really not good, so about 6 years back I just quit all smoking. But by that time I had already quit cigs, but still had used tobacco to build joints
Now I feel VERY glad I did. Not only do I feel so much healthier, body and mind, the money I have saved!! When I quit I started getting a little tickly cough. I googled it and found to my delight that, when you smoke you destroy the little fine hairs on your vocal pipes, but the body, being the amazing organism it is soon recuperates and they grow back, and your pipes become pink again, and this image really also encouraged me. I love that sense of healthy rejuvenation
I have my ideas about why people get lost in habits. Remember Alan Watts? He was a major influence on my life. When I had early psychedelic experience (LSD) when 15, which went onto 16 + I then went through these years searching to find some integration, and the only author that spoke to me was he. But later I was shocked to find out he destroyed himself through a serious alcohol habit!! And I ofen explore possible reasons he did that, because he would write and talk about accepting the mysterious 'what is'
I think that even he was fearful of his 'ordinary' self. He is quoted as saying 'I don't like myself sober'. So ask yourself what is it about yourself you find uncomfortable when your not stoned?
