Roots breaking ground?
    #22222957 - 09/11/15 04:52 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So I was taking this pic of a Pedro pup I've been keeping an eye on and noticed what appears to be roots breaking through the soil.

Is this normal? The Pedro in question has been in that pot for maybe 5 months and seems to be doing well as far as I can tell. Just noticed this today and wondered if its root bound or if the roots are "looking" for something, air, water, nutes etc.

Should I cover em with more soil or let em work it out on their own? Hell, maybe it's not even roots and it's just my noob showing.

Recently I did decide to loosen up the top layer of soil. Just got in there a couple knuckles deep and stirred it up a bit. Pretty sure there was minor damage to some small roots close to the surface. How would one go about aerating with out root damage? Not sure if this is related to the original question.

everything looks good to me, and i would just leave it as is - pedros are vigorous root growers

the pot looks pretty good. how deep is it?

i woukd probably just add some top layer rocks to keep in some moisture and let the roots keep taking underneath

Cool. Thanks for the insight IU, I was mostly concerned about the exposure being an inroads for rot or some other form of root damage.

The pots about 6-8 inches deep in the middle.

Anybody got any suggestions on the aeration thing? Seems like a good thing to do from time to time but it seems the Pedro likes to send out alot of shallow roots. Which makes sense for cacti I suppose.

Gotcha. I'm a very hands on kinda guy. Side effect of my line of work.
I'm always looking for something to be wrong, something that needs to be fixed or improved. I've got a ways to go before I can fully embrace the "benign neglect" that cacti seem to require.

Means you have an incredibly healthy plant!
In some plants, light exposure can damage roots, though. I don't think this is the case with your cacti.
