Less than a week after spore syringe inoculation:

I have stellar growth on one! Cool!  :super:

2 days later:

Wait a minute....  :uhoh:

1 week later:

I believe standard procedure here is to open the lid and wave the plate violently near my SAB room?  :hehehe:

In all seriousness, seeing that sudden growth in the middle plate was kind of heart breaking.
It was a homemade syringe from my original PF tek grow, and the last plate I used it on had a smaller, but similar green spot.
Pretty sure the entire syringe is trash now.

What do the other 2 plates look like? Is there any healthy growth to transfer from?

Did you use a single drop of spore solution or more?

Anyone know what this is?  I noticed it before any myc was even near it. Nothing, then one day BAM brown/green "dust" on uncolonized oats. Seems to be working its way down the jar slowly. I looked through all the contam guides I could find, nothing really looked like this to me.

What kind of grain is that?

What he said lol. I couldn't find ANY affordable rye, seems like it runs about $1/lb. Seriously? Fuck that. I see why people are extremely cautious when using LC on rye jars lol, shit is expensive! $0.14/lb for whole oats, a 50lb bag is $7 hehe.

Buy from farmers. I can get rye for 0.20 a lb direct from a farmer.

it's mold contamination what kind of grain doesn't matter, how the cultivator got the mold in the jar is what matters

Well I guess farmers are the problem. I looked online first, mainly for rye, and when I discovered the prices I thought local must be cheaper.
I live in a big rural farm area, but apparently not one where rye is a thing. None of the local grain elevators had rye, but the closest one that is 6 minutes from my house has oats year round $7/50lb.
I mean, I don't know if a grain elevator would be considered "direct from a farmer" or not. It definitely wasn't a "retail shop" though lol.
Any reason I should keep looking for rye? The oats seem to work ok.

Yeah, I am pretty sure I know how it happened. I wanted to use all my plates as efficiently as possible, I had 6 transferred plates, 2 of which looked "iffy". I think it was just because some of my plates had bubbles form somehow after they solidified in the PC, causing the mycelium to grow in interesting patterns through the bubbled areas. I let them grow longer than I really wanted to to be sure it was actually mushroom myc. I am a little bit of a perfectionist, and I like to sterilize as many oats as possible per 2 hour PC session, seems more efficient use of my time I guess. My PC fits 7 qt jars, and doing tiger drop 2.0 would be 6 jars. I figured if I was going to be splitting one plate between 2 jars I might as well do that for all of them and PC 2 loads of jars. Each would have 2 inoc points since I quarter my agar to inoc. That math didn't exactly work either though, because with full PC loads I would end up 14 qts and 2 unused jars.

Enter the problem: I still had my 2 original plates that I transferred from, they were also transfers from my spore inoculated plate. Well, they looked clean to me still. Overgrown, sure. But there was 0 signs of contams around any of the areas I cut into. Just a bunch of healthy mycelium, I thought. Fuck it. I did my first inocs using 7 jars and 4 plates, the 2 originals and the 2 iffys. Half plate of agar per jar except the last which had a whole original plate dropped in. 2nd batch of 7 jars used the other 4 beautiful, healthy, 100% clean plates. Guess which one ended up getting contaminated?

I actually put smiley faces with varying degrees of smile/frowns based on the plate used. The super clean plate inocs got =) , iffy plates were =/, and originals were =(. I expected the other =( jars to contam after the first did, but they still look really healthy and recovered just fine after the shake.

TL;DR: I used plates that had already been transferred from to inoculate 3 grain jars, one got a contam.

Yeah I literally drive to the farmer. Maybe in your area it's different but I love dealing with the farmer. They are very happy to answer any questions I may have about the grain and never seem to want to know why I want a few hundred pounds of whatever.

Ah, I don't really know how to get a hold of the farmers directly I guess. I called any local business google found related to "grain", it was all grain elevators basically, or their distribution warehouse whatever I suppose.
I just figured if no grain elevators have rye there must not be farmers growing rye around here anyways. Perhaps I am wrong, I am not a farming expert by any means lol.

Hi! So I just entered my grow room after a few days being away, and noticed some of my jars and one tub have a blue tint. I was wondering if anyone here would be able to identify the contam? For most jars and the tub, it's a very light blue tint, it doesn't look very bacterial. Except for one jar, the one in the last two pics. Thanks!
