Just ditched my Reishi monotub. Been fruiting for almost a month and the green devil decided to rear it's ugly head. Didn't get a pic but just thought I'd share. Fuck you trich.

Straw fucking loves the green. Made a PE tub and about 6 trays for my first time. Lost every fucking one except for a MDK tray. I'm thinking that 1.5hrs pasteurization is too much for straw.

Mine all went to shit after a couple of weeks. I'm positive that my spawn couldn't be that bad over all those jars. I barely get contaminants with coir but I've been trying to find a cheaper alternative for a while now. Haven't given up on straw just yet, I will try using a shorter cook time next since molds on bulk are said to be due to over-pasteurization.

Should be ok I guess. Inside is not exactly free of mold spores either .

I favor straw too. I think the reason why straw doesn't do so well with pasteurization is maybe there's not a lot going on in the straw? So like when you pasteurize it? Its not too far off from being sterilized? So that plus being, for some reason, readily accessible nutes for fungi? Which is why straw is probably known for one flush wonders? cause all the nutes get sucked up so fast, suggesting they are readily available? Imagine me speaking with a blonde valley girl, up speech. So like if you were to use manure soak water or just add some
\ For a spike in the good bacteria and then maybe straw will be much more contam resistant? I'm sure there are a number of sources for nenficial bacteria to add to the straw soak water I'm just implying that straw itself might be lacking in that area without some help.

Can't get any good amount of manure unfortunately. Most of the people who keep horses only ride them in the street so field aged manure is hard to come by. My only find was from nearby a horse riding school but you have to hunt it down around the trails they use. It's kinda far as well, don't go there often.
I am thinking that I need to reduce my cooking time, plenty of people use straight straw with success. I just need to nail my tek down.

Its not that simple. This was a big debate a long time ago, sterilizing straw versus pasteurization, we had a tc sterilizing straw and inoculating open air, no prob. It wasn't an exact science but back then, we were chalking it up to different climate. People living in dry desert climates where getting away with stuff like that versus living where trich is on every tree. If its just a matter of a race against time, high spawn ratio should fix that, being a fully colonized sub is contam resistant. I would invite you try wetG2sub or slurry2sub in effort to get it colonized asap. A more aggressive approach would be to colonize the grain/straw, sterilized, in a large jar or jars, before spreading out into a tub.
There are other supplements you could add to the pasteurization water to provide the good microbes that may be lacking in straw as I suggest. I know you can buy compost tea or something to that effect. Maybe composted cow manure from the nursery? Worth a shot.
