Orange Trich?
    #22221851 - 09/11/15 12:49 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I put some Laetiporus on moist cardboard a few weeks ago, kept it around even though it seemed to have failed. It seems to be growing trich type mold (spore color and growth habit), but the some of the non-sporulated mold is orange? It doesn't seem distinct from the sporulated mold, and I don't see any white mycelial growth. Is there an orange Trichoderma (or related) species? Could the mold be transporting pigments from the original specimen? Or is there actually Laetiporus growing, which releases nutrients to the mold, so they grow together?

Pics when I get a chance.

This is the best I can do with my phone's camera. The colony on the left is the one I'm interested in. There is almost a bulls-eye pattern, with alternating rings of orange and green.

My previous observation was mistaken. Looking closely I can see uncolored trich-type mycelium, so I'm leaning towards the hypotheses of a symbiotic co-culture of Laetiporus and Trichoderma.

As a further note, IIRC this cardboard was very lightly supplemented and can support weak mold growth by itself.

Well the green is definitely not good. It can be any # of green molds. Aspergillus is my guess, but if you can put it under the scope it can be identified easily.

The yellow almost looks like bacteria (wet spot/bacillus).. the murky colour is way off. Laetiporus still has a fairly white mycelium

Thanks man. The orange has a sort of fungus like texture, just like the green. Interesting to see bacteria do that. I  think I'll forget about this for a month or so. If the growth pattern continues I'll try and borrow a scope to narrow things down.
