Ya i looked into it more after posting and found that they grow on the roots of trees (oak) and you could get 5 pounds per tree at around 10k-15k that might be worth it. Thanks for the reply

Pigs were once used to find truffles; however, most truffle-hunters now use specially trained dogs since the pigs ate the truffles upon discovering them.

growing them requires massive land, and trees impregnated with the fungus.
It's not like you can grow them in trays. It's more like farming, than growing. If that makes sense. It is also not guaranteed, they are very picky, because 1 person found a landscape that works for him, and was able to successfully do it, does not mean it will be viable for just anyone, you can't do it at home.
Also, there was a company cultivating morels. How many do you know who can do it? food for thought.

the answer lies in the ability to perform many experiments with many different factors tweakable on tap. like, if you were god, maybe. as i have said before, though, there are companies that exist that sell trees inoculated with black truffles (the perigord type, melanosporum, i think). c. lefevre has a company in oregon that supplies these trees, along with a certain amount of consultation on soil types and rainfall patterns and all the factors involved. the inoculation takes place with very young seedlings. most of the truffles harvested in france and italy are cultivated there are other truffles that are cultivated. the success rates are low, sort of like the success rates of some cultivators here at the shroomery...so that the methods are similar. do as much as you can, in many different ways, until you have success. OVERKILL IS NECESSARY. there is a lot of free info out there, you just have to look.... the pacnw is not the only place in north america where culinary truffles can be harvested. new species of truffles are discovered more often than many other life forms. largely unexplored stuff. i say try. try. try. if chanterelles will fruit from a pot, why not truffles?

Cordyceps sinensis (Caterpillar mushroom) is even more valuable. They have medicinal value and are hard to fruit. Most extracts and preparations are from liquid culture of the mycelium and not the fruit bodies of the parasitic mycelium grown on insects.

Sorry if my ignorance seeps through here, but I am skeptical that a way could not be found to cultivate truffles with more success. With all the research power of so many amateur hobbyists here I seriously doubt that we could not find a way. If anything I bet that it would be fun anyway.
I propose the STP - The shroomery truffles project!
Damnit, if I could make money for growing mushrooms I'd be a happy man.

There are succesfull truffle growers in my country (Spain). But it is outdoors not indoors. In fact, indoors is impossible right now cause truffles need trees to develope. They do it this way: They put a couple of very clean mature truffles in clean water inside a jar that can be closed. Then the grower dissolves the truffles and let them sit for a couple of days. Afterwards they throw in some clean tree seeds (Quercus ilex) and let sit for another day, stiring the jar once in a while. Then they sow the seeds in a pot containing sterilized soil picked up from a truffle producing forest. Once the seeds germinate and the little plants are growing healthy, a first transplant takes place to a larger pot (soil: same as above). This is the time to cut off the main root to induce secondary roots development (where the truffles like to grow). After 2 years of growing the little trees in a greenhouse, these are transplanted outside in the definitive place making sure the mycorrizae did form (using a loupe or microscope). Then you cross your fingers and pray a little bit. In 6-10 years the trees begin to produce truffles.Quercus ilex truffle production lasts for over 40 years then the amount of truffles decreases. The comercial growers calculate a productive life of 15 years per tree with a 50 kg/10.000 m2/year harvest.

from www.mushworld.com Growing Conditions for Cordyceps species
Writer: Gwang-po Kim / Date :2000-07-16 / hits: 372
Cordyceps sinensis can be used as food and medicine. In China and Japan, this mushrooms are highly valued is medicine or health food.
Until recently, the supply of the Cordyceps relied mostly on harvests of naturally grown mushrooms; however, as demand for the mushrooms shows a constant increase in the world market, the existing supply has become scarce.
There is an active movement for research and development of the mushroom resource in the fields of artificial culture, liquid fermentation, and application of new techniques.
Through artificial cultivation of Cordyceps mushrooms, which is a very complicated and difficult process, it is not easy to have mycellium formed because the complex environmental conditions that affect the host insects' ecological surroundings directly or indirectly must be regulated precisely, not to mention the ecological conditions suitabl e for the mushrooms.
*On occasions change in temperature, to a lower degree, is necessary.
The Cordyceps bacterium prefer relatively low temperature, about 15~20 C, and form sclerotium at a degree between 10~20 C, and stroma at 14~25 C.
It demands higher temperature for the stroma to grow on the ground surface, about 26~32 C, and spores are released at 28~32 C.
*Humidity conditions should meet each of the following conditions.
- Air humidity 80~90% for growth, stroma formation, and releasing of spores.
- 50~80% air humidity, and water content of ground 40% for hibernation of the infected host insect.
- For the growth of mycellium in the host's body, 60~70% humidity.
- Sclerotium can be formed only in dry environments, at about 10~20% humidity.
* As for air conditions, most of the Cordyceps bacterium are aerobes, but for some facultative anaerobes, oxygen should be regulated.
*Different light conditions are demanded according to different growth stages.
- Light is not required for spore germination or for mycellial growth.
- For the formation of sclerotium and stroma, a little bit of light is required.
*Acidity conditions
- Cordyceps grow in low-acid conditions.
- Mycellial growth takes place between pH 5.0~6.5 acidity, and it shows the fastest growth rate at pH 6.0~6.3.

No damn takers on my spectacular idea of the STP, the shroomery truffles project eh. Just think, at the very least we could highjack that shark STP's acronym.
