Six Month Old White Oyster Grow bag. Is it alive?
    #22219516 - 09/11/15 12:04 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hello, all!

I'm a newbie. I just joined. I wanted to know about a grow bag of white oyster mushroom my frielnd has, but I'm not sure if this is the place for that.

However, If it is... :-)  Is my friends mycelium still alive?

My friend has a 6 month old grow bag of white oyster mycelium.

- I do not think it has been misted or watered

- I do not think it was stored in the fridge, but at room temperature (50's-70's F)

Someone from a shroom farm gave the bag away. We were thinking of attempting to get to grow on some cardboard and go from there... I thought we should ask around!

:-)

Might make an interesting experiment. I have no experience with oyster so can't say more than that.

By the way, this friend of yours, his name wouldn't be SWIM by any chance?

I take it that's the bag in the pic. Is it the pic or is it kind of yellow. The mycelium should be nice and white. If there's a lot of yellow it's probably contaminated or dried out or both. I grow oysters all the time and they are pretty hardy. I've thrown bags out after 3rd flushes and they had trich all over them, but were still producing huge fruits. What is the substrate used to grow the mycelium. If it's a sawdust block, cut a few holes and give it a bath for about 24 hours to hydrate it. Then take it out of the water and put it somewhere in your house where it can get indirect sunlight and the temp is between 60 and 75 degrees. I recommend leaving it in the bag because it helps retain the moisture and keep out contaminants. If it starts to form pins, mist them a few times daily by spraying water into the air and letting it fall down onto the pins. Spraying them directly causes the pins to abort. After picking the mushrooms from the first flush, wait about a week and give the another bath and they should flush again. You want to rehydrate in between each flush. Hope this helps! Happy growing.

Thanks!

Thats the bag.  I really don't know the substrate used. This was a gift from some shroom farm some time ago. My friend has no clue. It could be saw dust... It could be hay.  Its hard to say.

In the event its not sawdust, do you have different advice?

Would you recommend trying to get this to continue growing on new sawdust and/or cardboard?

Thank you so much!
