hummingbird said: OP- bagged compost varies greatly in quality, but if its made properly, it shouldn't burn your plants...I actually have plants sprout in my compost pile sometimes, and they always look really healthy. If you go the bagged route, worm castings is probably a better choice though overall...just my .02
Do you normally use bagged compost? Or do you ever make your own? I was just wondering if you did make your own, if you did anything special other than just throwing scraps in a pile and waiting...

Any soil would work. The thing to look for in soil is pH levels, if they include any microbes, fertilizers, etc.
If you wanted to, you can dig up some dirt from your yard, throw it in the over at iirc 350F and bake it for an hour or so or until the center is the desired temperature to sterilize(and also, unfortunately, kill all microbes beneficial beneficial or not).

I have bought bagged stuff before, but I have a pretty good compost pile going. I have rabbits and chickens, so their poop goes into it as well as kitchen scraps and used mushroom subs. Its pretty much make a pile and wait...maybe some turning here and there. If your C/N ratio is good, it can be done in a month or two.
I do find myself buying worm castings though sometimes, because my vermiculture skills are not the best. There are worms in my compost pile, but my worm bin attempts haven't been the most successful.

Maybe that's what my problem is with my pile - the C/N ratio. I'm pretty lazy with it, but I just wish it wouldn't take so dang long to finish.
I used to have rabbits and worms myself, and both their 'leavings' were useful to add to soils, (you can use fresh rabbit poo in soils without harming your plants, in case you didn't know). But I don't have the rabbits anymore, and my worm system suddenly collapsed this summer (the rain did em in).
I wish I had composting down well enough to be able to not ever have to buy any soils or anything....
